SEATTLE – It wasn't the tough shots that gave the Seattle Pacific Falcons a tough time on Thursday night.

It was the easy ones.

Jordan Harazin scored 16 points, and Suzanna Ohlsen had a career-high 14, but that was not enough as SPU dropped a 72-62 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball decision to Western Washington in Brougham Pavilion.

Trishi Williams led the Vikings (19-6, 13-4 GNAC) with 20 points and was the only player in double figures for Western, which wrapped up second place.

Freshman guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash./Monroe HS) beat her previous career high of 10 for the Falcons (16-9, 10-7 GNAC), who are in a two-way tie for fourth with Montana State Billings. Those teams are one game behind third-place Simon Fraser (11-6). The Clan come to Brougham on Saturday at 7 for the regular-season finale.

Regardless of the outcome on Saturday's Senior Night, Seattle Pacific is assured a spot in next week's conference tournament at Saint Martin's in Lacey.

“Right now, we're going to play on Saturday, and we have to rebound from this loss,” SPU head coach Julie Heisey said. “We have to use this to make us better, and use it to go into the tournament.

“The outcome was disappointing tonight, but our effort was good.”

That was especially true defensively and on the boards. The Falcons limited Kristin Schramm and Corinn Waltrip – Western's co-leading scorers at 12.5 points apiece – to single digits at nine and seven points, respectively. They out-rebounded the Vikings, 42-32, with senior center Joani Reimer (Ferndale, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) grabbing nine. Sophomore forward Katie Benson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) had eight.

But Seattle Pacific struggled on offense, hitting just 29.6 percent (16 of 54). Of those 38 misses, 18 were attempted lay-ups.

“Lay-ups will either kill the other team, or they kill you,” Heisey said. “It gave (the Vikings) a lot of hope. I'm proud of the way we played defense and the way we rebounded – we've improved in those areas.

“(But) making lay-ups and free throws – it changes the game.”

Sophomore guard Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) chipped in 10 points points for SPU and handed out a team-high four assists. Senior guard Harazin (Colfax, Wash./Colfax HS), who came within one point of her career scoring high, dished three assists, giving her 286 for her career. She's six away from taking the No. 15 spot on the all-time GNAC list.

Western Washington had 50-44 lead with 10:26 to play before Harazin delivered every point of a 7-0 scoring run that put SPU in front, 51-50, at the 7:53 mark.

The game was tied at 54-54 when Western tallied the next four points to go back ahead for good, 58-54.

Seattle Pacific got within two on four occasions after that, the last time at 64-62 on a pair of Harazin free throws with 1:35 left. But those were its final points of the night, as the Vikings scored the last eight of the game.

The teams traded 10-point first-half scoring runs. The Falcons used theirs to take a 13-4 lead while keeping Western Washington off the scoreboard for 7 minutes, 24 seconds. The Vikings came right back with their 10 straight to go up 14-13.

The remainder of the half was back and forth, with Seattle Pacific up at the break, 28-27.
