SEATTLE – Kishia Mitchell of Seattle Pacific, running a hurdles event for the first time ever, logged a Great Northwest Athletic Conference automatic qualifying time on Saturday at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open.
 
Falcons sophomore Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers HS) placed second in the race in 1 minute, 4.68 seconds. That easily beat the GNAC automatic standard of 1:05.28.
 
Mitchell is better known as a top sprinter, and she is the reigning conference champion in the 100 and 200 meters. Although it's not likely she would run the 400 hurdles at the GNAC meet in May, her time currently ranks No. 2 in the conference.
 
SPU had four other individual winners, all of whom took their events with GNAC automatic qualifying marks: senior Terra Schumacher (Sublimity, Ore.) in the pole vault at 11 feet, 5 ¾ inches, senior Ali Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) in the long jump at 17-9, senior Natty Plunkett (Bellevue, Wash./Newport HS) in the 5,000 meters in 17:36.14, and senior Myisha Valentine (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./North Sound Christian HS) in the 200 meters in 25.76.
 
Mitchell, junior Emily Quatier (Portland, Ore.), sophomore BryAnne Wochnick (Portland) and Valentine teamed up to win the 4x400 relay in 3:56.41.
 
The Falcons are back in action this week at the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational in Bellingham. Some of the multi-event competition takes place on Friday, but most everything else is on Saturday at Civic Stadium, with field events starting at 10 a.m., and running events at 11.
