LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Two men's four-oared crews posted second-place finishes Saturday for the Seattle Pacific rowing team at the Cascade Sprints on American Lake.
In their maiden voyage, the Falcons novice four completed the 2,000-meter course in 7-minutes, 16.54-seconds. SPU defeated three other crews and was bested only by Western Washington and its winning time of 7:05.72.
A pair of Washington State boats finished third (7:25.92) and fifth (8:51.01), sandwiched around the fourth-place crew from host Puget Sound (7:55.87).
In the race for men's varsity fours, Western Washington was first in 6:51.73 to finish one boat-length ahead of the Falcons second-place time of 6:56.50. WSU placed third (7:25.92) and UPS was fourth (7:55.87).
SPU competed another men's crew that clocked a third-place time of 7:20.62 in the second varsity four event. WWU won that race (6:53.63) followed by WSU (7:16.34). Pacific Lutheran was fourth (7:29.33).
The Falcons also had three women's boats entered and two of them turned in fourth-place performances.
SPU posted a time of 7:54.72 in the varsity four race that was won in 7:29.27 by Puget Sound. Willamette was second (7:30.54) and WWU third (7:33.53). The Falcons finished ahead of fifth-place Seattle University (7:57.04) and sixth-place Oregon (8:05.71).
Western was a convincing victor in the women's second varsity four competition with a time of 7:36.68. Willamette was a distant second in 7:53.94, followed by Puget Sound (7:54.36) and SPU (8:01.84).
The defending national champion Vikings won the featured women's race. WWU's varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:42.41 and the rest of the field was tightly packed with less than seven seconds separating the remaining four finishers.
UPS was the runner-up (6:57.6), Willamette was third (6:59.36), PLU fourth (7:03.12) and Seattle Pacific fifth (7:04.01).
The Falcons fleet hosts its only home meet of the season next Saturday (Mar. 31). SPU entertains Seattle University in the Raptor Cup. The five-race schedule starts at 8 a.m. on the Lake Washington Ship Canal, starting under the Fremont Bridge and rowing West toward the SPU campus.
