NORWALK, Calif. –
Seth Pierson needed a couple of extra days to get where he wanted to be. But on Saturday, the Seattle Pacific junior got there.
Pierson ran a career-best time in the 1,500 meters to earn a spot on the provisional qualifying list for the NCAA Division II track and field meet, and Carly Andrews of the Falcons earned a provisional mark in the women's javelin during the Beach Invitational at Cerritos College.
Pierson (Cashmere, Wash./Cashmere HS) ran 3:50.48 to finish 16
th among the 118 competitors. That wiped out his previous career-best of 3:52.92 set last March while he was a sophomore at Everett Community College. It easily was below the NCAA provisional standard of 3:52.50. To make it an automatic trip to Pueblo, Colo., for the nationals on May 24-26, it'll take a 3:45.30 or faster.
Factoring other D-2 times at Saturday's meet, Pierson now ranks 15
th on the national list, pending the outcome of other meets around the country this weekend.
On Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., Pierson was unable to finish the 1,500 after getting bumped, then clipped on one of his legs with about 600 meters to go.
Pierson's time has dropped steadily during the past month. He ran 4:00.83 on March 18 in Eugene, 3:55.84 on March 31 in Bellingham, and 3:55.21 on April 7 in Spokane prior to Saturday's performance.
Falcons senior Andrews (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah HS) had by far her best javelin throw of the season, launching it 136 feet even – more than 5 ½ feet farther than her previous season best of 130-4 just two weeks ago at War V. That meet on April 7 in Spokane was her first of the season after Andrews missed the first month while a foot injury healed some more.
Andrews' career-best distance is 144-9, set last May on the way to an All-American bronze-medal finish at the NCAAs.
Seattle Pacific now has 11 qualifiers for nationals, with two of those – senior Ali Worthen in the heptathlon, and senior Brittany Aanstad in the javelin – in automatically. The other nine – including four this past week – are provisional qualifiers. While Pierson and Andrews made it on Saturday, senior Natty Plunkett (10,000 meters) and junior
AJ Baker (men's steeplechase) made the cut on Thursday at Mt. SAC.
One of those provisionals is sophomore McKayla Fricker (Canby, Ore.) in the women's 800 meters. She ran a career-best time 2:11.57 on Saturday, good for 19th among 104 competitors. That was nearly a full second better than her previous best of 2:12.53, and now is 10th nationally while awaiting all of the weekend results. She had been 16th coming into the weekend.
SPU's sprinters enjoyed another strong day at the Beach just 24 hours after posting six personal-bests and eight Great Northwest Athletic Conference automatic qualifying times on Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
Sophomore BryAnne Wochnick (Portland, Ore.) capped a solid weekend with her second 200-meter PR in two days. Wochnick ran 25.28 seconds, following up her 25.51 at the Clay. She came into the weekend with a best time of 25.67, set last April 30.
Sophomore Kishia Mitchell, who broke 25 seconds (24.96) for the first time in the 200 on Friday and had a season-best run in the 100 (12.24), was back in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday – an event she ran for the first time less than a month ago. Mitchell finished 23
rd in 1:03.33.
Her Saturday time ranks No. 2 in the GNAC this season and is just .01 away from climbing into the conference's all-time top 10. Mitchell's previous best time was 1:04.68, set in her inaugural hurdles race on March 24 at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open in West Seattle.
