SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
Nate Johnson posted his best-ever total in the decathlon, finishing in ninth place with 6,537 points on Tuesday at the Sam Adams Multi-Events meet.
The total for Falcons junior Johnson (Boise, Idaho) at Westmont College was high enough to get him onto the provisional qualifying list for the NCAA Division II championships
It also was 164 points better than his previous career high of 6,373 with which he won last year's Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship. His current total ranks No. 9 nationally.
Former SPU star Chris Randolph, now with California-based Team Skechers, won with 7,840. Sharon Day of Team Asics took the heptathlon with 6,337.
Seattle Pacific senior Ali Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) became an NCAA automatic qualifier in the women's heptathlon with a career-best 5,071 points -- two more than the minimum needed for a guaranteed ticket. She finished in fifth place. Falcons junior Katy Gross (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS) became a provisional qualifier with 4,513 points. She wound up eighth.
Nationals are set for May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo.
Johnson's best finishes of the meet came in the final there events. He tied for sixth in the pole vault by clearing 14-1¼, a season best by six inches, was a mere two inches shy of his career high, and was good for automatic qualification to the GNAC meet.
He followed that with sixth place in the javelin at 172-8, then obliterated his career best in the 1,500 with a time of 4:38.57. It was an improvement of 13-plus seconds from his old mark of 4:51.79 in last year's GNAC multi-event championships.
Decathletes need 6,976 points for a guaranteed spot at nationals. Johnson will get one more shot at it April 30 and May 1 at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Event Championships at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
Last year, Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) made it as a provisional qualifier and wound up with an All-American sixth-place finish, totaling a then-career high of 5,044.
Her total from Monday and Tuesday's competition puts her fifth in the current D-2 national heptathlon standings.
Worthen has had several NCAA provisional qualifying marks in numerous events, both indoors and outdoors, during her SPU career. This was her second automatic mark. Her first was in the indoor high jump as a freshman in 2009, and she wound up fourth at NCAAs.
She got off to a solid start on Tuesday by going 18 feet, 11 ½ inches in the long jump. That in itself was an NCAA provisional qual distance and tied for second place overall in that event. That left her needing 754 points in the 800, and a time of 2:25.25 or faster.
Worthen made it by 17 hundredths of a second.
The javelin was the top event of the day for Gross. Her toss of 129-6 was just one inch shy of her personal best and gave her fourth place.
Gross made it to NCAAs in the hep last year as a provisional qualifier and finished 13th.
Worthen, Gross and Johnson will join the rest of their Seattle Pacific teammates in Spokane on Saturday for War V, a meet that feature teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The first event at Spokane Community College is at 9 a.m.
