SPOKANE – Nate Seely ran faster than he ever in the 800 meters on Saturday -- and ran himself right into the group of national leaders.

The Seattle Pacific star logged a career-best time of 1 minute, 51.95 seconds in the War V meet at Spokane Community College, fast enough for an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time and the No. 5 spot on the national list. It was his first outdoor NCAA time.

The previous best for Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) on an outdoor oval was 1:53.17 in last year's GNAC preliminaries at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. He ran an indoor career best 1:52.26 on Jan. 28, fast enough to make NCAA provisional, but ultimately not fast enough to get Seely into the national meet.

Seely's performance and a victory from Seth Pierson in the 1,500 meters helped the Falcons finish ninth among the 15 teams with 35 points.

That, in turn, helped the Team Washington men – with SPU, Washington State, Eastern Washington, Central Washington, Gonzaga, Seattle University, Whitworth, and Spokane Community College – outscored the World team, 488-247.

Seely wasn't the only SPU performer shining on Saturday. Senior javelin thrower Brittany Aanstad (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) took the national D-2 lead inthe women's javelin with a career-best throw of 161 feet, 11 inches. The Falcons had three other winners on that side, and wound up second in the team standings with 128 points, just five behind first-place Idaho's 133.

The Team Washington women beat the World team, 427.5-309.5. That gave Washington the overall victory, 915.5-556.5

Factoring into the points for the World were Northwest Nazarene, Idaho, Boise State, Eastern Oregon, Great Falls, Lewis & Clark, and Treasure Valley CC.

Washington has never lost in any of those categories since the War meet's inception in 2008.

Pierson (Cashmere, Wash./Cashmere HS) clocked 3:55.21 in the 1,500. That was the junior's best time in SPU maroon and elevated him from the provisional onto the GNAC automatic qualifying list.

Ryan Endresen (Portland, Ore.), a junior, got his conference automatic time in the men's 400 hurdles with a season-best 55.61.

Freshman David Ferguson (Inverness, Illinois), who had been on the brink of a GNAC provisional time in all three sprints, finally got one on Saturday when he ran 22.61 seconds in the 200, good for fifth place. The automatic time is 22.40.

Aanstad's 161-11 in the javelin put her atop the national list by nearly nine feet. The leader coming into Saturday was Kim Hanslovan of Clarion (Penn.) at 153-0.
 
Aanstad's previous best was 159-4, set last May 7 at the Ken Foreman-Ken Shannon Invitational in the final track meet at Husky Stadium. At the time, that also was No. 1 in the country, and Aanstad went on to a second-place finish at last year's nationals.
 
Her previous season best this spring was just 148-5 at the Oregon Preview on March 18 in Eugene.
 
Aanstad is SPU's second automatic qualifier to nationals in the past week. On Tuesday, senior Ali Worthen (Coos Bay, Ore.) made NCAA auto in the women's heptathlon at the Sam Adams Multi-Events in Santa Barbara, Calif.
 
Seattle Pacific had three other women's winners on Saturday.
 
Senior Myisha Valentine (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./North Sound Christian HS) took the women's 400 meters in a career-best 57.29 seconds. That pushed her up from GNAC provisional to automatic qualifying status in that event.
 
Freshman Maliea Luquin (Portland, Ore.) won the women's 100-meter hurdles in 14.95 seconds, also a career-best, and her first time under 15.
 
Emily Quatier, Kishia Mitchell, BryAnne Wochnick and Valentine teamed up to win the 4x400 relay in 3:54.26.
 
Also for SPU, Valentine also wound up second in the women's 200 meters with a career-best time 25.46 – a full three-tenths better than her previous PR of 25.46 posted at the Club Northwest Spring Break Open on March 24.
 
Mitchell (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers HS) improved to GNAC automatic in both the 100 (12.33), and, in her first 200 of the outdoor season, logged a GNAC automatic 25.52.  She is the defending conference champion in both events.
 
Falcons junior Quatier (Portland, Ore.) took a big drop to 57.43 in the 400. That gave her third place, an automatic ticket to GNAC, and was more than a second better than her previous season best of 58.43 set last Saturday in Bellingham.
