BELMONT, Calif. -- Senior forward
Megan Lindsay scored one goal and assisted on another during the first-half Thursday, leading the 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific women to a 3-1 non-conference soccer road win over Notre Dame de Namur to start the 2012 campaign.
The Falcons (1-0) improved their record to 9-1-2 in all-time season-opening contests, including four straight victories.
Lindsay (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) picked up where she left off last season when she netted a team-leading 12 goals en route to third-team 2011 All-America accolades.
On Thursday, she set up the inaugural goal just 3:30 into the contest at NDNU's Koret Field. Lindsay served a far-post cross to sophomore
Heather Young (Lacombe, Alberta), who quickly smashed it into the back of the net from eight yards out.
At 18:28, sophomore
Annie Thomas (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) delivered a pass at the top of the box to Lindsay, who took a touch before delivering a 20-yard strike into the left of the goal. That was the 30th career goal for Lindsay, elevating her into the No. 4 spot among all-time SPU scorers.
“It's not surprising at all that
Megan Lindsay started the season off with a goal and an assist and is off to a great start this year,” said Coach Chuck Sekrya, who directed SPU into the NCAA Tournament in each of his previous nine seasons.
The Falcons went ahead 3-0 at 20:25 on an own goal. SPU junior
Josie Graybeal (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor) attempted a long shot that took a slight deflection off an Argonauts defender and evaded the goalkeeper.
Notre Dame (0-1) got on the scoreboard two minutes after halftime. After a short clearance attempt by the Falcons, Adriana Cortes sent an 18-yard shot into the goal at 47:02 to cap the scoring.
“It's always nice to win the first game and it was great to be up 3-0 at halftime,” said Sekyra. “But, we relaxed a little bit and lost our focus in the second half. We'll learn from it and hopefully get that scenario out of the way early.”
Junior goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage) had two first-half saves for SPU, which outshot the Argos 15-6.
The Falcons remain in Belmont to play a neutral-site game against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The SPU women host their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 6 against Azusa Pacific. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
