BELMONT, Calif. -- Senior
Brittany Langdon scored in the 82nd minute Saturday, but the 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific women could not get the equalizer despite several chances late in a 2-1 non-conference soccer setback against Cal State San Marcos.
The Falcons (1-1) finished with a split on their season-opening road trip that began Thursday with a 3-1 victory at Notre Dame de Namur. San Marcos (2-1) won Saturday's game at Koret Field that was a neutral-site contest.
SPU surrendered a pair of goals early in the second half to trail 2-0 before Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) scored on long shot off a pass from sophomore
Alexa Diaz (Burien, Wash./Kennedy).
“Brittany got a through ball from
Alexa Diaz and volleyed it in. She buried it into the heart of the goal, right past the 'keepers head,” described Falcons coach
Chuck Sekyra.
“We had several chances to tie the score after that, one after another. We had all kinds of chances, but just couldn't finish.”
SPU outshot the Cougars 4-0 during the final six minutes, including an attempt by freshman
Laura Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) with 56 seconds remaining that was denied by goalkeeper Amanda Sears.
San Marcos was outshot 19-7 for the game, but got three saves from Sears and one from a defender to preserve the win.
Falcons junior
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage) was credited with one save.
The teams played a scoreless first half during which SPU compiled a 10-2 shooting advantage.
After halftime, Shelby Bush played a part in both San Marcos goals. She cleaned up a loose ball in the goalmouth at 46:51 after a long ball by teammate Natalie Lara squirted loosed from Harold.
Less than 10 minutes later, Bush served a cross to Brianne Searl, who directed the ball into the goal at 55:34.
Sekyra already has his strategy set for SPU's next outing.
“We have to play with more of a purpose. We need to come out and be better technically, be better focused and finish our opportunities,” he said before contrasting Saturday's effort with the Falcons better performances in two preseason games and the season opener.
“The way we started the season was going after teams, getting numbers in the attack and causing lots of problems for them. Right now we're just not playing with as much purpose as we should be.”
The Falcons return to Seattle and host their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 6 against Azusa Pacific. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
