SEATTLE – Junior Kaylie Winston headed in the game-winning goal with 15 seconds left to play Wednesday, capping Seattle Pacific's 2-1 come-from-behind win over Western Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (5-2) improved to 2-1 in league play while dealing WWU (5-2) its first loss in three GNAC outings. The Vikings had their five-game winning streak halted.

Winston (Pasco, Wash./Pasco HS) scored on a five-yard header from left of the goal at 89:45. Brittany Langdon (Irvine, Calif.) initiated the scoring play with a long, looping ball to the right side of the box that was flicked by Laura Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) across the goalmouth where Winston was waiting near the left post.

“Laura got the flick and somehow it just popped in and I was able to get a head on it and get it into the back of the goal,” Winston described. “Those are the best goals, when you come from behind and work so hard and are able to get it into the net for your team.”

That was her first goal as a Falcon. Winston transferred to SPU prior to this season after amassing 50 goals during two seasons at Walla Walla (Wash.) Community College.

“Kaylie had a great week of practice and she is a goal scorer,” said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra. “She's great at finding the ball around the goal and we need that.

“She was sitting in front of the keeper all week, finding the ball around that goal and she took her training from practice into the game today. I'm so glad when you see something like that happen and it makes a difference like that.”

Western got on the scoreboard first when Brianna Jones scored from the goal line at 71:30. Joana Houplin sent a free kick from the left flank to the right side of the goalmouth. The Vikings' Katherine Miccile headed it back to the left side where Jones pried it away from SPU goalkeeper Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) for the easy goal.

Freshman defender Shayla Page (Redmond, Wash./Eastlake HS) netted the equalizer with her first collegiate tally. SPU's Alexa Diaz (Burien, Wash./Kennedy HS) served a corner kick from the right side to the far post and Page directed an eight-yard header into the upper left of the goal at 80:31.

Shayla Page has been close all year. She finally just buried one,” Sekyra said. “She's been around that goal all year. She smacked a ball off the crossbar down in California and she had a girl clear the ball of the line the other day.”

Harold stopped three shots for the Falcons. Jamie Arthurs had three saves for WWU, which was outshot 13-8, including a 9-2 deficit in the second half.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half with WWU leading the shot count 6-4. Sekyra took advantage of the halftime break to alter his attack to a more aggressive style.

“We changed tactics a little bit in the second half and decided to go in a different manner to try to put them under pressure. We came out with a way better level of intensity and a little more purpose to get back in this game and go at them.

“We finally just found our groove the last 15 minutes. Once we got that first goal the game entirely changed. We put them on their heels a little bit with how we changed our style.”

Seattle Pacific remains at home to host Central Washington on Saturday. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
