LACEY, Wash. –
Katie Thralls ran to a top-10 finish, taking eighth overall, and the Seattle Pacific women had another pair of top-20 finishers to take second place at the Saint Martin's Invitational cross country meet on Saturday morning.
The Falcons, ranked 18
th nationally this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, totaled 48 points in the meet on the Saint Martin's campus. Western Washington won with 27. SPU beat out two other Great Northwest Athletic Conference stablemates, as Alaska Fairbanks was third with 65 points, and Saint Martin's fourth with 95.
This was the fifth time the Falcons have finished as high as second at Saint Martin's. They did not race here last year, and were fifth in 2010.
Thralls (Livermore, Calif.), a senior in her first year of cross country, completed the 6-kilometer course in 23 minutes, 17.44 seconds. It was her first time of being the first SPU runner across the line. The only GNAC competitor ahead of her was Western Washington's Katelyn Steen, who was third in 22:28.24. Ruth Perkins, who competed for Seattle Pacific from 1999 to 2003 (known then as Ruth Hawkinson) was the winner in 22:07.39.
In last week's Sundodger Invitational, Thralls finished seventh in the Open Division race.
Sophomore Jasmone Johnson (Federal Way, Wash. / Federal Way HS) ran 16th overall on Saturday in 24:04.51, and freshman
Anna Patti (Renton, Wash. / Lindbergh HS) was 20th in 24:22.40.
Seattle Pacific ran just four in the men's race. Freshman Brett Bertrand (Sammamish, Wash. / Eastside Catholic HS) was the first Falcons across the line, taking 36th in 28:10.02 for 8 kilometers. It was Bertrand's first college race.
Many of SPU's top runners from both teams took the day off from competition in preparation for next Saturday's Charles Bowles / Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore. That meet, which typically includes several teams from the West Region in addition to GNAC teams, will be the last major competition for the Falcons prior to the conference championships on Oct. 20.
