BILLINGS, Mont. –
Kyle Peterman's 83rd minute header off a corner kick evened the score at 1-1 against Montana State Billings and it remained that way through overtime Saturday as the No. 2-ranked Seattle Pacific men tied for the second straight time in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer game.
The Falcons (6-0-2) had opened the season with a school-record tying six wins before playing to a 0-0 draw at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday. Saturday's tie moves their league record to 2-0-2.
MSUB (4-2-1), which is undefeated at Yellowjacket Field with a 1-0-1 record, saw its GNAC ledger change to 1-2-1.
Billings started the scoring midway through the second half. Sam Butterworth fired a 19-yard shot that deflected off an SPU defender. The ball changed directions and evaded senior goalkeeper
Zach Johnson, who was unable to prevent it from rolling into the left side of the goal at 76:40.
“They got a goal against the run of play. We got caught in a counter,” SPU coach
Mark Collings described. “We still had it covered and had it defended. One of our guys blocked a shot, but it deflected and went the other way so Zach couldn't recover.”
Peterman (Boise, Idaho) netted the equalizer at 82:21 with his second goal of the season. The Seattle University transfer raced into the center of the box and headed a
Danny Olivas corner kick back to the left side of the goal from six yards out.
The Falcons continued to attack the Yellowjackets goalmouth with three shots inside the final five minutes of regulation without conceding any attempts. They had a 5-1 shooting advantage during the two 10-minute overtime sessions, but were unable to put any into the goal.
MSUB goalkeeper Eoin Hurley stopped eight shots, including one in each overtime period, to preserve the tie.
Johnson (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) had two saves for SPU, which dominated the shot count by a 24-7 margin.
“That's probably the most frustrating thing about soccer is that it's really, really hard to score goals,” said Collings. “I don't fault the way we're playing. I don't dislike the opportunities we're generating.”
The Falcons nearly got on the scoreboard first with their final shot of the opening half. Freshman
Bryson Pavel (Boise, Idaho) had his 45th-minute attempt skim off the right post as it traveled out of play.
“We've been a little bit unlucky,” Collings continued. “They had two shots on goal in the second half and all the overtimes. One of those shots went in. We had seven on goal after halftime, but just couldn't quite find the back of the net. Their defense played well, their goalkeeper played well. We just couldn't solve the puzzle today.”
The Falcons resume their five-game road trip on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Burnaby, B.C. with a clash against two-time defending GNAC champion Simon Fraser.
