SALEM, Ore. – School-record Saturdays are getting to be the norm for the Seattle Pacific cross country teams.

Senior Will Harrison ran to an 18th-place finish, leading the Falcons pack across the line for the first time since 2010, and SPU checked in fourth among the 19 teams at the 38th annual Charles Bowles / Willamette Invitational.

Seattle Pacific tallied 203 points and jumped two spots from last year's sixth-place finish. That had been the previous school best in the meet at Bush's Pasture Park. Only the University of Portland (a near-perfect 16 points), Boise State (111) and San Francisco State (129) finished ahead of the Falcons.

Freshman Katie Morris continued to establish herself as the front runner for the SPU women. Morris placed 15th, helping the team secure fifth place with 192 points, tops among the NCAA Division II schools in the race. Oregon State won easily with 28, followed by Boise State (96), Portland (176) and Portland State (199).

The previous best place for SPU's women was sixth in 2011.

Two weeks ago at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, the Falcon men finished second with 108 points. Both the place and point total were school records. The women had a program-best 88 points and were third in the team standings.

Harrison (Tucson, Ariz.) completed the 8-kilometer Cardinal men's race in 25 minutes, 40.58 seconds. That easily exceeded his previous best time on the course of 26:16.03, which he set last year.

Joining Harrison among the five scorers for 29th-ranked SPU was senior AJ Baker (Au Gres, Mich., 27th in 26:03.45), senior Seth Pierson (Cashmere, Wash. / Cashmere HS, 43rd in 26:17.84), senior Jordan Wolfe (Bend, Ore., 48th in 26:21.40), and freshman Brett Bertrans (Sammamish, Wash. / Eastside Catholic HS, 26:46.40).

Harrison led Seattle Pacific in both races at Alaska Fairbanks in 2010, then got injured in a meet two weeks later. That slowed him for the rest of that season and part of 2011, as well, but he now has put together back-to-back solid races this year. At Sundodger on Sept. 15, he was 36th overall and broke the 26-minute mark for the first time.

“Will had a really good race today, and was really pleased with the outcome, and he looked strong,” SPU coach Erika Daligton said. “I'm just happy for him that he was feeling good. And some of our freshman guys had a good performance.”

Morris (Spokane, Wash. / Shadle Park HS) was at the front of the SPU women's pack for the second meet in a row. She finished 5 kilometers in 18:31.97 and was the first Division II runner across the line.

Sophomore Robyn Zeidler (Plymouth, Minn.) was the No. 2 scorer for the Falcons, taking 27th in 18:56.54 – a tick faster than her previous course PR of 18:56.68 in 2011. Completing the scoring pack were freshman Lynelle Decker (Vancouver, Wash. / Mountain View HS, 42nd in 19:07.30), sophomore Jasmine Johnson (Federal Way, Wash. / Federal Way HS, 56th in 19:15.31), and freshman Anna Patti (Renton, Wash. / Lindbergh HS, 69th in 19:25.93).

The gap between the top five was just 54 seconds.

“We were the first D2 school, so that was great,” Daligcon said. “Katie Morris had a solid day. She said she didn't feel that quick, but she was able to hang in there. Robyn had a good second half of her race, and Jasmine and Lynelle looked a little bit better than I've seen.”

This was Seattle Pacific's last major meet prior to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, which are set for Saturday, Oct. 20, at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

“We can take this into our conference meet and race with confidence knowing that we've had some big invitationals and have done well in some smaller meets,” Daligcon said.
