SEATTLE – Ali Martin drilled in the go-ahead goal early in the 62nd minute Saturday night, then added an insurance score 18 minutes later – both assisted by Ashley Shaw – to lead Seattle Pacific past Hawaii Pacific 3-1 in a women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
 
Riley Dopps also scored for the Falcons (3-1-0), who completed the non-conference portion of their schedule.
 


Megan Fuller tallied a goal in the 51st minute that drew Hawaii Pacific (1-3-0) even at 1-1. Eleven minutes later freshman midfielder Shaw (Seattle/Seattle Lutheran) initiated the play that led to SPU's tie-breaking goal.
 
Shaw chased down a loose ball to the left of the penalty area, gaining control just before it would have rolled out for a goal kick. She turned and lobbed a short cross into the box. It landed on the foot of Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) just inside the 6-yard box, and the sophomore forward one-timed it into the back right corner at 61:11.
 
“She was great, she's a true finisher,” SPU coach Chuck Sekyra said of Martin. “The way she played tonight, she's going to get four or five goals by herself in a game someday.”
 
Martin secured the victory with her goal at the 79:05 mark. Shaw, playing outside the box on the left side, lofted a target ball that Martin ran on to and shot it into the back right corner from eight yards away.
 
Those were the first two goals of the season for Martin, who gave full credit to Shaw's passing that set up the stellar scoring opportunities.
 
“Both were amazing balls by Ashley. I just got on the end of both of them.”
 
Sophomore defender Dopps (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap) put SPU on the board midway through the 39th minute. Alexa Diaz (Burien, Wash./Kennedy) crossed a ball through the penalty area from the attacking left side. Freshman forward Laura Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood) flicked it with her head out to Dopps. From the right side of the box 12 yards away, Dopps launched it into the back left corner for her first goal of the season.
 
“When we get our outside backs involved we're dangerous. To see Riley Dopps our right back score a great goal was just fantastic,” Sekyra said.
 
Fuller tied it for the Sea Warriors at 50:18. On a counterattack, Liana Gualadarama sent a short through ball upfield. Fuller caught up to it, went one on one into the box and parked it into the back left corner.
 
“We know that when we get scored on we have to come back that much harder,” said Martin. “Our goal is always to get a goal back as soon as we can. We got two back, so that was good.”
 
The Falcons otherwise dominated the game, outshooting Hawaii Pacific by a lopsided 33-5 margin.
 
“We created a ton of chances. We kept at them, kept chipping away creating quality chances and finally broke them,” Sekyra described.
 
Seattle Pacific begins Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday at Montana State Billings, with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
 
League foes will be aiming to de-throne the three-time conference champion Falcons.
 
“We're excited and ready for GNAC,” Martin said about next week's start of league action. “We always have a target on our backs. Everyone wants beat us and we're ready for the challenge.”
