BURNABY, B.C. – The Seattle Pacific Falcons regained their shooting touch on Saturday night. The Simon Fraser Clan, however, never lost theirs.

Aubree Callen pumped in 19 points for SPU, but Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe had 20 for Simon Fraser, as the No. 10-ranked Clan hit 60 percent from the field on the way to an 83-63 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball victory in West Gym.

Suzanna Ohlsen header 2012-13
The Falcons (10-6, 4-4 GNAC), who dropped their third straight, also got 13 points from sophomore guard Suzanna Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) and a career-high 12 from junior center Riley Butler (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS). That was Butler's first double-digit scoring performance for SPU, beating her previous high of nine points, set on Jan. 5 at Saint Martin's.

Simon Fraser (13-2, 6-1 GNAC) hit 33 of 55 from the floor, and was especially deadly from 3-point range, sinking 11 of 22.

Seattle Pacific, which hit just 23 percent (14 of 61) in Thursday's 61-44 loss at No. 8 Western Washington, was back up to 43.9 percent on Saturday (25 of 57), including 40 percent (4 of 10) from downtown. Both of those marks were above its season averages.

“Simon Fraser is probably one of the best offensive teams I've seen in our conference in the eight years I've been here,” SPU coach Julie Heisey said. “They're just so solid. Their bench scored a lot of points (a 30-8 advantage) – they're so deep.

“We knew that offensively, we had to find a way to disrupt them,” she added. “We had that stretch when we had seven turnovers and we just weren't able to recover.”

The Falcons have a bye on Thursday, then conclude the first half of the GNAC schedule on Saturday with a 4:15 p.m. PST tip-off at Montana State Billings.

SPU took a quick 14-8 lead on Saturday and was still up 18-15 on a 12-footer from the right corner by Butler with 14:11 left in the first half.

But the Clan ran off the next 17 points to go up 32-18. They kept the Falcons off the board for 6 minutes, 51 seconds, forcing SPU into seven turnovers that they converted into 14 points – 12 of them from downtown.

Down 44-30 at halftime, Seattle Pacific got as close as 11 on four occasions early in the second half, the last time at 50-39 on a pair of free throws by Callen with 16:45 still to play. But the Falcons could come no closer as Simon Fraser, which hit 10 of its first 12 shots after the break, eventually pushed it up to 20 at 68-48 with 10:33 to go.

The Falcons were a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line. They came into the game having climbed to the No. 1 spot in NCAA Division II for free throw-shooting accuracy at 80 percent.

Simon Fraser had a 30-25 rebounding advantage, just the second team in 16 games this season to grab more boards than the Falcons.

Katie Benson header 2012-13.
Callen's 19 points pushed her past 500 for her career. She now has 505. Junior forward Katie Benson had nine points on Satudray to put her right at 900 for her career.

““I'm really proud of our team – again, we went without two of our most experienced players,” Heisey said. “Riley had the best game of her career, Aubree just had a fabulous all-night, and Brooke Bowen came off the bench and played well.”

We're just playing good teams right now,” Heisey said. “They competed hard down to the end tonight and kept playing. … We're doing the right things. If we keep doing the right things, something good will happen.”
