LACEY, Wash. – The Saint Martin's Saints didn't back down on Saturday night against Seattle Pacific. By the end of the night, it was the Falcons who had gone down.

Aubree Callen scored a career-high 26 points, but Saint Martin's went on a 14-0 run bridging the first and second halves to beat SPU in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game in Marcus Pavilion, 70-66.

Junior guard Callen (Jerome, Idaho) hit 8 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. She beat her previous career high of 21 points, set on Nov. 17 against Azusa Pacific. She also had six rebounds, two assists, and three steals on Saturday.

The Falcons played without starters Rachel Murray and Mechela Barnes, who were out with injuries from Thursday's 72-65 victory at Western Oregon, and dropped their first conference game of the season. They are 3-1 in the GNAC, 9-3 overall.

“Right now, we're young and we're learning, and missing two starters is huge,” head coach Julie Heisey said. “But not to take anything away from Saint Martin's – they came out to compete, and they weren't intimidated. They saw us turning the ball over, and they got some confidence.

“It's early, and I think part of a season is learning and growing, and I really have a lot of confidence in our kids,” Heisey said. “But we have to take a big step up and make sure we're ready to battle on every possession every day.”

SPU is home next week, playing host to Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday night at 7 in Brougham Pavilion, followed by Alaska Anchorage on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

Junior center Riley Butler (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) added a career-high nine points for SPU on Saturday, and Katie Benson tied her career high with 11 rebounds.

The Falcons had a 26-23 lead with 2:25 left in the first half on a putback by Callen. But Saint Martin's (8-6, 1-3 GNAC) scored the final nine points of the half to take a 32-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Saints then tallied the first five points of the second half to make it 37-26 before freshman Maddey Pflaumer (Issaquah, Wash. / Issaquah HS) ended Seattle Pacific's dry spell with a lay-in.

Saint Martin's had a 47-36 lead with 11:50 left when the Falcons started a 12-4 surge, cutting it to 51-48 at the 6:14 mark. That was as close as SPU came, as the Saints stretched it back to 10 at 62-52 with 2:36 left.

“Their match-up zone caused us a lot of problems – we didn't get into an offensive rhythm,” Heisey said. “We tried to fix some things at halftime and some things differently, and we really did. We got it back to three, then turnovers bit us in the butt, they hit some 3's, and it went downhill from there.”

The teams traded big scoring runs during the first half. Saint Marrtin's raced to a 9-2 lead inside the opening three minutes, but the Falcons responded with a 16-2 run, with Callen supplying half of those points, to go up 18-11.

Seattle Pacific hit just 37.9 percent from the field (22 of 58). Saint Martin's finished at 45.1 percent (23 of 51).

With Benson's 11 leading the way, the Falcons had a 39-31 rebounding advantage, the 11th time in 12 games they have done so.

But SPU had 23 turnovers, leading to 22 Saint Martin's points. The Saints turned it over 19 times, which Seattle Pacific converted into 20 points.

Chelsea Haskey led Saint Martin's with 18 points, and Angela Gelhar had 14.
