NAMPA, Idaho –
Laura Moore and
Ali Martin each netted a first-half goal Thursday for Seattle Pacific, which posted a 2-1 women's soccer win over Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest at NNU Soccer Field.
The Falcons (9-4-0) stopped a two-game slide and improved their league record to 6-3-0.
"It was a good win," SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra exclaimed. "We came out and knocked the ball around as good as we have all year and scored two quality goals. We had control of the game and I definitely enjoyed how we played."
Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) tallied her team-leading sixth goal just 3:43 in the game. The sophomore forward collected a cross in the goalmouth from
Demi Waitley on the left flank and fired a six-yard blast into the top left corner.
Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) got what proved to be the game-winner at 25:27 with her third goal in the last four games. She intercepted the ball from an NNU defender and tapped it into the goal from close range.
After registering six goals last season, Martin had gone scoreless until the Oct. 5 visit to Simon Fraser. She got SPU's lone tally in Saturday's 2-1 loss to second-ranked Western Washington.
Sekyra is thrilled with Martin's mid-season re-emergence as a scoring threat.
"She's been great as far as consistently creating opportunities for herself and others," he said. "It's great to see Ali be such a huge difference-maker for us again.
"She came into the game and played great today. Ali's been really good with the ball and great around the goal."
The Crusaders (1-8-3) trimmed the deficit to one at 67:41 when Sarah Blum finished a flick from teammate Kelsey Martin with a long shot into the upper left corner from well outside the 18-yard box.
The rally ended right there as the Falcons did not concede another shot over the remaining 22 minutes.
SPU senior goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) stopped one shot.
Argia Phillips made four saves for the Crusaders, who were outshot by a 14-9 margin.
The SPU women stay on the road for Saturday's GNAC game at Montana State Billings. Kick-off is 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time at Yellowjacket Field, where the Falcons lost in their last two visits.
"We need to believe that we can play great on the road as well as at home," said Sekyra, whose team has a 4-3 road record and is 5-1 at home in Interbay Stadium.
"Our game goes anywhere we go. More than anything, if we play our game for 90 minutes we'll be fine."
