SEATTLE – In a Halloween night game, the Seattle Pacific offense was scary good.

Heather Young scored twice and assisted on a third goal Thursday for the SPU women, who posted their season-high scoring total in a 5-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer victory over Simon Fraser at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (13-4) won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 10-3 in league play to take over second place in the standings. Their previous high goal figure was three, accomplished on six occasions.

"It's perfect. I couldn't ask for a better night for my team," said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra. "You want to go out there and get after it, get everybody into the game and get some players who are a little beat up off the field so they can rest for Saturday. We did that tonight."

Young netted the Falcons third goal at 23:48 on a low 21-yard shot that carried from outside the top of the box and evaded goalkeeper Simone Tessler on its way into the right of the Clan goal.

In the second half, Young delivered a through ball to freshman Hannah Huesers for a breakaway against the Simon Fraser goalkeeper. Huesers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) dribbled around Tessler before slipping a 14-yard shot in at 56:14 for a 4-0 lead.

At 62:03 Young capped the scoring with another shot from just outside the box, this one placed into the upper right corner. Huesers was credited with an assist on the play.

"Heather had a great week of practice and she looked like how she practiced tonight," Sekyra said. "She finished a ton of balls this week in practice and just looked really sharp. It was great to see that carry into the game."

Young pushed her career total to 13 goals, tied with Ali Martin for the top mark among current Falcons. The junior forward is the lone Canadian on SPU's roster, hailing from Lacombe, Alberta.

Simon Fraser (1-12-2), located in Burnaby, B.C., dropped to 1-10-2 in GNAC games.

Freshman Maddie Krauss (Lake Oswego, Ore.) opened the scoring at 7:33. She collected a loose ball on the right and fired a 13-yard shot into the left side of the goal from a sharp angle.

Young, Huesers and Krauss each tallied their fourth goals of the season.

Senior Josie Graybeal (Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig Harbor HS) scored for the first time this year, at 16:03. Her 10-yard boot high into the left of the Clan goal was set up by a cross from Alexa Diaz on the right flank. That was the team-leading eighth assist for Diaz (Burien, Wash./Kennedy HS).

"We've got a lot of weapons right now. We're in a nice groove," Sekyra summarized. "Our mantra right now is "90 minutes of SPU soccer." When we do that from beginning to end it's really fun."

Starting goalkeeper Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) and halftime replacement Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS) combined for SPU's 10th shutout. They each stopped two shots.

Tessler made six saves for the visitors, who were outshot by a 23-6 margin.

The SPU women close out the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Central Washington at Interbay Stadium. They own a two-point lead over the Wildcats, so Saturday's winner will be the GNAC runner-up.

Western Washington clinched its second straight conference crown with Thursday's 2-1 win over Central.

Saturday's game will be the first of back-to-back meetings between CWU and the Falcons. They will clash again on Thursday in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. Kick-off is 4 p.m. at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
