Box Score Box score, play-by-play SEATTLE – A stout defensive performance coupled with 20 points and a career high-tying 17 rebounds from tournament MVP
Katie Benson made for an easy 62-28 win for Seattle Pacific University over Point Loma Nazarene in the final women's game of the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night in Brougham Pavilion.
The Falcons allowed the fewest points in 30 years while pushing their record to 4-0 for the first time in six seasons. Point Loma, hitting just 10 of 57 attempts from the field, fell to 1-1.
"It was a big deal to stop the drive and not give them wide open looks," SPU coach
Julie Heisey said. "They typically score on lay-ups and 3's, and we did a good job in the first half of not giving up lay-ups."
The Falcons are now 26-0 all-time in the tournament.
Behind Benson, SPU forged an early 12-5 lead, but then went scoreless for more than six minutes. The draught ended when
Betsy Kingma flushed back-to-back transition treys to ignite a 26-4 run to end the half.
Benson, a 6-foot-2 senior from Snohomish, worked inside for the bulk of her points. Her sole 3-pointer gave SPU a 52-19 bulge with 8:25 left.
"I was thrilled with Katie, especially the 17 rebounds," said Helsey. "She was able to work within the offense and get easy baskets. That was huge."
Junior guard
Suzanna Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) contributed 10 points, and sophomore forward
Maddey Pflaumer (Issaquah, Wash. / Issaquah HS) collected a career-high10 boards and seven points. SPU owned a 53-38 advantage in rebounds.
The Sea Lions were led by Savannah Erskine's eight points. After connecting on 8 of 22 from 3-point range and scoring 74 points on Friday against Central Washington, Point Loma missed 21 of 24 from beyond the arc.
The Falcons were playing without their starting backcourt of
Aubree Callen – the team's second-leading scorer through three games – and
Mechela Barnes, both out with injuries. Freshman
Hannah Rodrigues filled in and finished with five points, six rebounds and three steals.
In the other second-round game, Central Washington beat Montana Tech, 63-58.
Ohlsen, Callen and Erskine joined Benson on the all-tourney team. Central's Jessica VanDyke also was selected.
SPU moves onto the Azusa Pacific Crossover Classic beginning Friday versus UC San Diego in Azusa, Calif.
