PALO ALTO, Calif. – Chasson Randle hit 13 of 16 shots Saturday en route to a 37-point performance for Stanford, which posted an 89-61 win over Seattle Pacific in a men's basketball exhibition game at Maples Pavilion.
The Falcons, ranked No. 2 among Division II competitors, were within one point of their Division I opponent early in the second half. They trailed by just eight with 9:33 left to play before their hosts staged a 24-4 game-closing run.
"It was a great game against a really good opponent. Seattle Pacific is one of the best Division II teams in the nation and they'll be competing for the whole thing, I'm sure," said Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins.
"They've been a terrific team for a number of years. Coach (Ryan) Looney does a great job with his group and I felt really good about the way we played, especially battling through some adversity."
The Falcons have now lost their last three meetings against Division I foes after winning three straight, capped by a 69-68 upset of Arizona on Oct. 27, 2011 in Tucson.
"We're thankful that we got to play Stanford," SPU coach
Ryan Looney said. "Anytime that we can play a team like that who can challenge us on the level that they did, hopefully in the long run will make us better."
Senior point guard
David Downs, the preseason Player of the Year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, paced SPU with 20 points.
Patrick Simon tallied 13 points, on four treys and a free throw, and
Cory Hutsen had 10.
Stanford built an early 21-4 advantage in the opening 4:44, including 10 points from Randle. The Falcons chipped away at the deficit and rallied behind a 12-4 surge to trim the margin to 38-33 by halftime.
"We got off to a slow start and then kind of got ourselves regrouped in the middle of the first half. We made it at least competitive at halftime," Looney described.
"We started to defend finally. When we were getting stops they couldn't press us, which was making it easier for us to execute on offense. For us when we are good on the defensive end of the floor we are really good and when we are not we are very average."
SPU opened the second half with an 8-4 run and twice drew within one point. A layup by Hutsen had the visitors within 44-43 with 16:44 remaining before the Cardinal netted the next five points.
The Falcons forged their final single-digit deficit on a jumper by
Matt Borton that made the score 65-57 with 9:33 left on the clock. Josh Huestis responded with a 3-pointer to start a streak of eight consecutive points and ignite Stanford's fantastic finish.
"We came out well in the second half and cut the lead to one. Then from there the wheels kind of fell off," said Looney. "We weren't very good defensively, got beat in transition a bunch and also gave up too many offensive rebounds."
The Cardinal shot 63.5 percent (33 of 52), with Randle leading the way. The junior guard made 5 of 7 shots from 3-point range and 6 of 7 free throws. Randle also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 33 minutes.
"He got loose on us in transition, we had a hard time getting the ball corralled then," Looney said of the difficulty in defending Randle. "We had a hard time guarding his dribble penetration in the halfcourt as well."
Anthony Brown scored 14 points for Stanford and Stefan Nastic added 12.
The Cardinal dominated the boards by a 35-22 margin led by the 10 rebounds of Huestis.
The Falcons shot 41.5 percent from the field (22 of 53) and made 8 of 23 treys.
SPU drew a split of its two exhibition games, including Tuesday's 92-71 home win over Concordia (Ore.).
The regular-season begins Nov. 8-10 at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The Falcons play games on three consecutive days, beginning Nov. 8 at 8:30 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Is SPU prepared to start playing for real?
"I don't know that we're necessarily ready yet," Looney concluded, "but in these two exhibition games we learned where we need to get better."
