BURNABY, B.C. – Jovan Blagojevic poked in a loose ball with 5:48 left in the final overtime Saturday, a golden goal that gave third-ranked Simon Fraser a 1-0 victory over Seattle Pacific and clinched the Clan's fourth consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer championship.
A free kick into the box from 40 yards out on the left side caromed off the right post. A goalmouth scramble ensued and two other Simon Fraser players took swipes at the ball before Blagojevic tapped it in at 104:12.
With one game left in the GNAC schedule, Simon Fraser (15-1-1) has an insurmountable four-point lead in the standings with 34 points on an 11-1-1 league ledger.
The Falcons (11-2-3) are second with 30 points on a 9-1-3 record after suffering their first GNAC setback. They had a school-record 14-game unbeaten streak stopped with their first loss since the Sept 7 season opener.
Red-shirt freshman goalkeeper
Cody Lang (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark HS) kept the game close for the Falcons, who faced a 14-5 shot deficit. He was credited with five saves.
Two of those saves came in rapid succession during the 40th minute. SFU's Colin Jacques had an attempt from close range blocked by Lang, who proceeded to quickly smother the rebounded put-back attempt by Alex Rowley on the goal line.
Brandon Watson stopped three shots and got the shutout for the Clan.
The Falcons had the only shot during the first 10-minute overtime session.
Anthony Mohammed red-directed
Matt Merchant's corner kick just over the crossbar in the 99th minutes.
Blagejevic's game-winning goal, his fourth in seven scores this season, came on the only shot of the second overtime.
Saturday's result evens the season series as the Falcons were 2-1 victors in the first meeting, on Oct. 3 in Seattle. The Clan gained a slim 22-21-6 edge in the all-time series.
The SPU men complete the regular season on the road. They visit Cal Baptist on Wednesday in a non-conference tilt before closing out the campaign on Saturday against GNAC foe Saint Martin's.
