RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cole Schmit scored consecutive goals just over two minutes apart Wednesday, leading California Baptist to a 3-0 non-conference men's soccer win over Seattle Pacific at the Lancer Soccer Complex.
The Falcons (11-3-3) suffered back-to-back setbacks for the first time all season, immediately following a school-record 14-game unbeaten streak. They lost 1-0 in double-overtime on Saturday at third-ranked Simon Fraser.
The three goals were the most given up this year by SPU, which had surrendered just 10 scores in its previous 16 games combined.
"We played hard, but we ran out of gas a little bit," said SPU coach
Mark Collings. "Our schedule has been grueling, especially these last few games at Western Washington, at Simon Fraser and then to fly down here and play at Cal Baptist.
"If anything I should take some of the blame for the scheduling. I don't fault the effort of our guys."
The Lancers (9-5-1) opened the scoring at 22:17 when Schmit dribbled from the right side of the box toward the right post before slipping a 15-yard shot past SPU goalkeeper
Cody Lang.
Just 2 minutes and 11 seconds later Schmit scored again off a scramble in the Falcons goalmouth. CBU's James Bogdanovich fired a point-blank shot that was deflected by Lang. Schmit reached the rebounded and tapped it in for his third goal of the season.
"We just made some mistakes early and they punished us for them," Collings said. "We had a hard time getting into the game early and they were all over us.
"We struggled to find the rhythm of the game and by the time we did we're down 2-0."
Right before the Lancers first goal, SPU had two close chances. But a 19th-minute attempt by
Ian Adams and a shot by
Danny Olivas in the 22nd minute both traveled wide of the goal.
Cal Baptist added a final tally when Alex Anderson split two defenders before setting up a one-on-one against Lang for Jonathan Fausto who finished at 81:05.
Lang (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark HS) tied his season high with seven saves for SPU, which was outshot by a 17-9 margin.
Joey Pacheco posted his third shutout for the Lancers, picking up five saves in the process.
"We'll get home and try to straighten some things out. We'll see if we can put together a big effort on Saturday and then we'll go from there," said Collings.
The Falcons conclude their regular-season schedule on Saturday against conference rival Saint Martin's. Kick off is 1 p.m. at SMU Soccer Field in Lacey, Wash.
The SPU men are in second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 9-1-3 record. They are unable to catch league champion Simon Fraser.
