FRESNO, Calif. – Right place. Right time. Right player. Right shot.
Right result, too.
Aubree Callen hit a 12-foot jumper from the right of the lane with 1.2 seconds left for the last of her 20 points on Saturday night, lifting Seattle Pacific past Fresno Pacific in the final game of the West Region Crossover Classic, 56-55.
Down 55-54 in the Special Events Center with 6.7 seconds remaining, the Falcons (2-0) called two timeouts to set up the play. Callen took the inbounds pass in backcourt, drove the length of the floor up the right side, stopped and fired, hitting nothing but net.
Fresno Pacific (0-2), following a timeout, flung a long inbounds pass downcourt. But SPU junior guard
Suzanna Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) jumped to deflect the ball, and time ran out before anyone could gain control of it.
SPU effectively won the tournament by being the only 2-0 team. Fresno Pacific finished 0-2, while Humboldt State and Western Washington were 1-1. Humboldt, after dropping a 71-66 decision to the Falcons in Friday's season opener, beat Western in overtime on Saturday, 77-68.
"We're going to take it," head coach
Julie Heisey said. "We found a way to win tonight. Now, we get to go home and practice and play two more games."
Those two games will be this coming Friday and Saturday in the annual Sodexo Tip-Off Classic in Brougham Pavilion. SPU will play Montana Tech on Friday at 5 p.m., then face Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday at 5.
Except for a tie at 30-30, Seattle Pacific trailed for first 11 minutes of the second half against Fresno Pacific (0-2), which went 4-21 last season in its first year at the NCAA Division II level after moving up from NAIA.
The Sunbirds were up 43-38 with 9:09 left when the Falcons put together a 7-0 run: a lay-up by Callen, a 3-pointer by Callen, and, at the 7:07 mark, a pair of free throws by senior center
Riley Butler (Kent, Wash. / Kentlake HS) to edge in front, 45-43. Butler finished with six points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal in nine productive minutes.
SPU twice stretched the lead to five, the last time at 52-47 on a
Katie Benson lay-up with 2:48 to go. The Sunbirds finally took the lead again at 55-54 when Patrice Saindon stole the ball and went coast-to-coast with 6.7 seconds to go.
Senior forward Benson (Snohomish, Wash. / Snohomish HS), coming off a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds in Friday night's season-opening victory against Humboldt State, had 15 points and eight rebounds on Saturday.
Benson, Callen, Ohlsen, and junior guard
Betsy Kingma (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport HS) each handed out three assists. Kingma also collected six rebounds, as did freshman
Hannah Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.)
Saindon and Charde Stevens tallied 10 points apiece for Fresno Pacific.
The Falcons play at home in Brougham Pavilion for the first time this season when they host the annual Sodexo Tip-Off Classic this coming Friday and Saturday. SPU will play Montana Tech on Friday at 5 p.m., then face Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday at 5.
Central Washington's women also will be in next weekend's Sodexo tourney, playing Point Loma Nazarene at 1 p.m. on Friday and Montana Tech at 1 on Saturday.
The Seattle Pacific men, ranked No. 2 nationally, play their Sodexo games against Colorado Christian on Friday night at 7, and Dixie State on Saturday at 7. The Central Washington men play the opposite opponents on the 3 p.m. slot.
