SEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific gymnasts gave their home fans plenty to cheer about Friday before embarking on a four-meet road trip.

Stephanie Wagner delivered SPU's best individual balance beam performance since 2011, and three teammates posted career-high marks on the floor exercise as the Falcons finished second to UC Davis in their final regular-season women's gymnastics meet at Brougham Pavilion.

The Aggies won the meet with 194.30 points. SPU, ranked No. 5 on the last USA Gymnastics collegiate list, tallied 192.125 – its second-highest score of the season. The only better total for the Falcons was 192.225 on Jan. 26 at Alaska Anchorage.

“Our vault score was way better than last week and our floor was better,” said SPU coach Laurel Tindall. “The other two events were lower than last week. I was glad that we pulled out the 192 because that's been our goal this week.”

SPU has topped the 191-point plateau in five straight meets for the first time since 2005.

Despite the lofty team score, Tindall talked about some small deductions that prevented an even higher output.

“We still had a point, at least, in little misses. Corrine (Wise) not landing her vault, Wagner going out of bounds, Kai (Tindall) going out of bounds, Wagner hitting her feet on her bar routine. We had lots of little one and two-tenthers here-and-there that added up. That's another point, plus we counted a fall on beam.”

Wagner (Estacada, Ore.), one of two SPU gymnasts honored on the team's Senior Night, put together a first-place beam routine that was awarded a 9.85, more than a full tenth better than runner-up Katie Yamamura of UC Davis (9.725). It beat Wagner's previous best mark of 9.825, and was the highest score for the Falcons on that event since Anissa Madrid earned a 9.85 on April 9, 2011 in a road meet at Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“She had an awesome beam routine. That's how she needs to hit to prepare for nationals,” Tindall said of Wagner. “Last year she had that mid-season slump where she fell a few times, so we're glad to see that she's really confident of herself and hitting consistently this year.”

Junior Kenley Memmel (West Bend, Wis.) led SPU's string of outstanding floor efforts. Her score of 9.775 beat her previous best of 9.75, and was good for third place.

Sophomore Sydney Clark (Eugene, Ore.) set the tone for the Falcons with an event-opening routine that scored 9.75 to eclipse her previous best of 9.725. That made her part of a three-way tie for fourth, a group that included teammate Corrine Wise (Seattle / West Seattle HS), the other senior honored on Friday. It also factored into Clark's second-place all-around total of 38.475.

Junior Kai Tindall (Brier, Wash. / Mountlake Terrace HS) followed suit with 9.60 on the floor, exceeding her old high of 9.575.

Seattle Pacific wound up with a season-high total of 48.575 on the floor. That came just one week after its previous high of 48.500.

Two Falcons tied career-best vault scores on Friday: junior Bryn Larson (Westminster, Colo.) with a 9.55 and sophomore Cara Lord (Collegeville, Pa) with a 9.675. Larson also had the top performance of the night on the uneven parallel bars for SPU, posting a 9.7, good for third place.

The Aggies Katie Yamamura posted a first-place all-around total of 38.925 fueled by a first-place effort on the vault (9.80). SPU's Shannon Escarra (Fayetteville, Ga.) was the third-place all-arounder at 38.100.

UC Davis got two event wins from Michelle Ho, who topped the bars field at 9.825 and registered the highest score of the night with a 9.90 on floor.

Tindall's troops now hit the road for four consecutive meets. She projected how the event lineups will evolve on the road trip.

“Our bar and our floor lineups are pretty set. Those are the ones that are going to score for us. The bars and floor squad are all capable of scoring 9.7, so those events are pretty set.

“Vault and beam we're still doing some shuffling around. Everybody is changing and hitting a little better and there may be changes there still.”

The Falcons travel to Corvallis, Ore. next Friday for a tri-meet with Oregon State and Arizona. Seattle Pacific will be back in Brougham one more time when it hosts the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championship meet on Saturday, March 23 at 6 p.m.
