SEATTLE – Senior
Corrine Wise tied her career high score on the floor exercise, and freshman teammate
Maria Hundley tied her uneven parallel bars mark on Friday night as Seattle Pacific finished second to San Jose State in a women's gymnastics meet.
The Spartans racked up 193.625 points in Brougham Pavilion. The Falcons tallied 191.45. That marked the fourth straight week that SPU, at No. 5 in the latest USA Gymnastics collegiate rankings, has topped 191.
“Another good team score, but we are really looking to get a 192,” said SPU coach
Laurel Tindall, who projected that, "next week we will get our season-high to this point.”
The Falcons have their final regular-season home meet next Friday against UC Davis at 7 p.m. That will be Senior Night and Alumni Night in Brougham Pavilion. Friday will not be their last appearance at home though, as SPU hosts the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships on March 23 at 6 p.m.
Wise (Seattle / West Seattle HS) earned a 9.775 on the floor, tying for second place behind the winning mark of 9.85 posted by San Jose State's Julia Greer. That equaled the highest floor score for a Falcon in 2013.
Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) had 9.725 on the bars to tie for fourth place. That matched the number she put up on Jan. 26 at Alaska Anchorage. Hundley came into the meet ranked No. 8 nationally on the bars.
Falcons sophomore
Shannon Escarra (Fayetteville, Ga.) finished second among the four all-arounders, totaling 37.975 points. Fellow SPU sophomore
Sydney Clark (Eugene, Ore.) was fourth with 37.700.
San Jose State's Beka Gher claimed the all-around crown with 38.95 points while her teammate, Cassandra Harrison, was third with 37.875.
Five different Spartans won individual events. Harrison was the vault champion (9.825), Cami Guyer won the bars (9.775) , Gher and Tauny Shearer were co-beam titlists (9.825) and Greer topped the floor field.
Seattle Pacific posted season-high team totals on the bars and floor.
“We started off rough on vault. We had a couple injuries and things that didn't go quite as well as we wanted to in warm-up, so some vaults that we were hoping to throw weren't able to go,” Tindall described.
“We came back and did great on bars. Everybody had a 10.0 start value and everybody hit really well. We threw out a 9.6 on bars as our lowest score, that was awesome.”
Led by Hundley, the five counting marks on the bars ranged from 9.725 to 9.625 for a total of 48.35. The previous season best was 48.225 at Anchorage on Jan. 24.
“Beam was a little rough and we had to count a fall there,” said Tindall. “Then we finished on floor, which again was a great performance for us. A great floor set.”
With Wise setting the pace on the floor, SPU tallied 48.500. Individual scores ranged from Wise's 9.775 to 9.525. The previous season high was 48.400 against Air Force on Jan. 18 in Seattle.
Wise also set the pace for the Falcons on the vault, tying for fifth at 9.60. Senior
Stephanie Wagner (Estacada, Ore.) was tops for SPU on the balance beam, taking fourth at 9.725, as she and teammates Wise (9.7), Escarra (9.675) and freshman
Alexa Okamura (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond HS, 9.60) all had no-fall performances.
