SEATTLE – It's deep into in the gymnastics season yet Coach Laurel Tindall is still tinkering with lineups and routines. A pair of recent changes paid big dividends on Saturday.

Senior Corrine Wise tied for medalist honors on the balance beam and freshman Maria Hundley equaled the school's vault record, leading Seattle Pacific to a second-place finish at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women's Gymnastics Championships on Saturday night in Brougham Pavilion.

SPU, ranked No. 4 on this week's USA Gymnastics Collegiate list, racked up a season-high 193.200 points. UC Davis won its fourth consecutive team title, finishing with 194.950 points. Air Force, which had finished ahead of SPU in a pair of regular-season meets, was third with 191.925, and Alaska Anchorage was fourth with 191.850.

This was the second straight week Seattle Pacific has topped 193 points and the 193.200 is the sixth-highest tally in school history. The Falcons had 193.150 in last week's regular-season finale at Washington.

Air Force sophomore Jessica Wallander won the vault with a near-perfect 9.925. UC Davis senior Michelle Ho took the uneven bars title at 9.775 and the floor exercise at 9.875. Aggies teammate Katie Yamamura was the all-around champion with a 39.05 total.

Wise (Seattle/West Seattle HS) got her team's final event of the night off to a solid start, earning a 9.775. That tied her season high from a Jan. 26 meet at Anchorage, and was just .025 away from her career high of 9.8. Wise deadlocked with Ho for the crown.

Traditionally, a team's best performer is placed at the end of the competition order. But Tindall penciled Wise into the opening position to start the Falcons beam rotation.

“In just the last two weeks we moved Corrine into the first spot on beam. That was her choice,” Tindall explained. “She said that she gets too much in her head and she thinks too much when she has to wait until fifth.

“She had three meets in a row where she didn't hit, and that's just not like her. We moved her to first and she's been great in that place. Corrine did a great job on beam tonight.”

Wise was SPU's first MPSF beam champion since Anissa Madrid won it in 2008. She also made the awards podium (top six) on vault and floor, tying for sixth on both.

The Falcons finished with 48.100 points on the beam, and for the second straight week did not count a fall in their total.

SPU came up big on the vault, its second event of the night. Hundley (Littleton, Colo.) led the way with a second-place overall performance, earning a 9.875. That smashed her previous career best of 9.700, which she recorded twice, most recently at Air Force on March 2.

Hundley became just the fourth Falcon to achieve a score of 9.875 on the vault, a feat that has happened just six times in school history. Kari Kelly posted 9.875 vaults in 2004 and 2005, Kristin Bryant did it in consecutive meets in 2007 and Jaynie Reynolds hit that figure once in 2005.

The fantastic freshman has been a recent project of the coaching staff, continually seeking to add difficulty to her vault.

“Maria was awesome,” exclaimed Tindall. “We've been working really hard to get her going and she finally busted out some good ones this week in a layout, which is a 10.0 start value. We kept our fingers crossed that she could do that in a meet.”

Freshman Rain Sullivan (Moraga, Calif.) got things started on the vault with a career-best 9.625. That was a full tenth better than what she posted in the season-opening meet on Sacramento State on Jan. 11. Saturday was her first on that event since then.

Sophomore Sydney Clark (Eugene, Ore.), who posted a fifth-place all-around total of 38.325, came up with a career-high 9.65 vault. That beat her old mark of 9.625.

The Falcons tallied a season-best 48.400 on the vault, eclipsing their previous season best of 48.2265 at Air Force on Mar. 2.

Junior Bryn Larson (Westminster, Colo.) and senior teammate Stephanie Wagner (Estacada, Ore.) tied for second on the bars with matching scores of 9.75. They helped SPU compile 48.475 points on the bars – its highest-scoring event of the night. Larson's mark was a career-best, exceeding her previous high of 9.725, achieved twice, most recently at Oregon State on Feb. 22.

Wise also led the Falcons on the floor with a 9.75, gaining a tie for sixth. SPU finished with 48.225 on that event, its first of the night.

“It was great meet. It puts us in a good position for nationals,” Tindall said.

Seattle Pacific is all but officially assured of a bid to the USAG nationals, set for April 12-14 in Shreveport, La. The eight-team field will be announced Monday and the Falcons are likely to receive the No. 4 seed.

That would mark the 31st time in the past 32 seasons that the Falcons will have advanced to nationals. SPU won three national championships, in 1986, 1992 and 1997.
