SEATTLE – It took until their last shot of the night, but the Falcons finally found the goal.

Junior forward Heather Young's header with 4:39 left to play on Thursday lifted Seattle Pacific to a 1-0 victory over Western Oregon in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer opener for both teams at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (4-1) registered their fourth consecutive shutout victory, getting three saves from senior goalkeeper Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS). She has not surrendered a goal in her last 370 minutes between the posts.

SPU outshot the Wolves 20-6 and needed all 20 chances as Young scored at 85:21 on her team's final attempt of the game.

"It was a quality goal at the end," said SPU coach Chuck Sekyra. "When you outshoot a team 20-6 that feels good. I would like to find the back of the net a little bit earlier and I think we will. We left some goals on the field tonight a little bit."

Sophomore Taylor Hauck (Shoreline, Wash./King's HS) fed a long pass down the right sideline to sophomore Laura Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS), who beat a defender before serving a cross toward the far post. Young (Lacombe, Alberta) raced to the ball and delivered a five-yard header inside the left post for her first goal of the season.

Moore has factored into a goal in all five games this season, scoring once herself in each of the first four before setting up Young on Thursday.

WOU tasted defeat for the first time, dropping to 2-1-2 overall.

The Falcons had a 7-2 first-half shot advantage, but WOU had the most dangerous opportunity. Makana Pundyke slammed a long shot off the crossbar for the visitors in the 28th minute and Savannah Bogan's follow-up attempt was smothered by Harold at the left post.

"Defensively we were pretty sharp," Sekyra said. "Against team that was sitting in a little bit and happy to defend, we've got to make them pay for that."

Wolves goalkeeper Amanda Rose Johnson was credited with nine saves.

The SPU women have their first conference road game on Saturday at Saint Martin's. Kick-off is 3 p.m. at SMU Soccer Field in Lacey, Wash.
