LACEY, Wash. – It never gets old for the Falcons when
Heather Young gets on a hot streak.
The junior forward tallied the lone goal for the second straight game with a 33rd-minute strike Saturday in Seattle Pacific's 1-0 win over Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's contest at SMU Soccer Field.
The Falcons (5-1) improved to 2-0 in league play while blanking their fifth consecutive opponent. Senior goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) stopped three shots to extend her scoreless streak to 460 minutes between the posts.
"Our back line did a good job of keeping them away from our goal and maintaining our shape," said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra. "I didn't feel threatened very often today, and it was great to get that fifth straight shutout."
The Falcons have not allowed a goal since their season-opening 2-1 loss at third-ranked UC San Diego on Sept. 5, outscoring foes 10-0 since then.
Sophomore
Laura Moore slipped the ball through the SMU defense from outside the box. Young (Lacombe, Alberta) ran on to the pass, took a quick touch and faked a low shot before chipping it over the sliding SMU goalkeeper and into the far side-netting at 32:20.
"That was a world class goal," exclaimed Sekyra. "Great pass, great run, great first touch, great goal."
It took Young a lot longer to find the goal on Thursday as her game-winning header in the 1-0 home victory over Western Oregon came with just 4:39 left to play.
"Both goals that she's had the last two games have been first class, high-quality goals," said Sekyra. "I think you are going to see her score now in a lot of different ways if she gets on a roll a little bit. The best is yet to come for her."
Young has compiled 11 career goals, including two this season and six in 2012.
"
Heather Young is one of the most intelligent players we have ever had in our program. She sees the game at a level that is way ahead a lot of the defenders that she plays against. Right now Heather is putting herself in great spots and she's being aggressive at the right time."
Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) has participated in a scoring play in all six games this season. She netted a goal in each of the first four games and notched assists in the last two outings.
Goalkeeper Gina Cardenas made six saves for the Saints, who were outshot 12-9. SMU (1-4) dropped to 0-2 in GNAC games.
The SPU women return home for a pair of conference games next week at Interbay Stadium. They host Montana State Billings on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 1 p.m.
