SEATTLE – Goals by
Ashley Shaw and
Demi Waitley inside the final 10 minutes Thursday rallied 25th-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 2-1 victory over Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
"We showed a lot of character and scored two quality goals," SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra exclaimed. "It definitely took a goal by them to force us to show a little more urgency."
The Falcons (6-1) extended their winning streak to six games while improving to 3-0 in league play.
Waitley (Coronado, Calif.) netted the decisive goal with 5:06 left to play. She directed a 10-yard, looping header into the Billings net off a cross from
Taylor Hauck at 84:54. That was the second goal of the season for Waitley.
"Offensive center-mid is probably the deepest position on our team and Demi's been great. I need to find more minutes for her," Sekyra said.
"When I ask her to go get in front of the goal it's because I know what great ideas she has in front of the goal. She has an ability to find the ball in front of the goal, maybe like no one else in our program in a long time."
Waitley's game-winner came less than five minutes after the Falcons tied the score 1-1 on a 25-yard free kick by
Ashley Shaw (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Lutheran HS). The sophomore's inaugural collegiate goal came at 80:10 and was set up by the only foul of the game.
Alexa Diaz was leveled by a Yellowjackets player and remained down on the turf for several minutes before being taken off the field for the rest of the game.
Sekyra went out on the field to check on his injured player. On the way back to the bench he had a brief message for the players preparing for the free kick.
"I walked out because Diaz was hurt and I looked at them and said 'Shaw's hitting it.' She did and it was awesome. At least I did something right tonight."
After a scoreless first half, the Yellowjackets got on the board first at 62:34 with their initial shot of the game on a breakaway by Alisa Sagdahl. Heidi Greenback slipped a long through ball from midfield. Sagdahl gathered the ball 30 yard out, dribbled to the right around the goalkeeper and slotted a 12-yard shot into the left side of the Falcons goal.
That was the first score surrendered by SPU in 522 minutes, dating to the Sept. 5 season opener. The Falcons shutout streak was stopped at five games.
Senior goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) was not required to make a save for the Falcons, who outshot the visitors 9-2.
Kaylee Kimmet stopped three shots for Billings (2-2-1), which dropped to 1-2 in GNAC games.
The SPU women play at home again on Saturday at 1 p.m. when Northwest Nazarene visits Interbay Stadium.
