SEATTLE – It didn't take long for
Hannah Huesers to make an impact once she got the opportunity.
The freshman forward came off the bench to score twice in her collegiate debut Saturday, leading 25th-ranked Seattle Pacific to a 3-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.
"I've just been saving her," SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra joked about Huesers, who didn't play in any of the first seven games.
"Sometimes freshmen come in and it takes them a little while to kind of get their bearings. She's been getting better and better each week and it was time for Hannah to make an appearance. And boy-oh-boy what a great job she did."
Less than five minutes after checking into her inaugural game, Huesers netted her first SPU goal on a tap-in at 25:44. She completed a brilliant give-and-go with
Ali Martin, whose pass from the right side found Huesers alone on the goal line.
The Lake Stevens (Wash.) High School product struck again less than nine minutes later off a terrific through pass from
Laura Moore on the left side. Huesers gathered the ball on the right side of the box and delivered a 10-yard strike into the open goal at 34:23.
Huesers nearly notched the hat trick, but a shot in the 61st minute went just wide of the left post. In the 71st minute, a hard Huesers attempt was deflected away by Crusaders goalkeeper Argia Phillips.
"Hannah was great today. That's what we saw this week," Sekyra said. "She had about five goals in one practice on Wednesday so we knew that she was comfortable. I think you'll see a little more of her from here on out."
A sophomore midfielder, Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS), opened the scoring at 9:11 with her team-leading fifth goal. She was wide open eight yards from the left post to collect a low cross from
Maddie Krauss on the right side of the box for an easy finish.
Moore has a goal or assist in seven of SPU's eight games this season, pacing the squad with 13 total points.
"Laura was terrific. She just continues to find the ball and finish so well," Sekyra said.
The Falcons (7-1) extended their winning streak to seven games with six shutouts during that span. They remained perfect in league play with a 4-0 record.
Two SPU goalkeepers combined for the shutout, but neither was required to make a save. Senior
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage HS) started the game and was replaced at halftime by junior
Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy).
Phillips made four saves for the Crusaders, who were outshot 12-6.
NNU (1-5-1) saw its record drop to 0-3-1 in GNAC games.
First place will be on the line on Thursday when the Falcons visit second-ranked Western Washington. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m. at Orca Field in Bellingham, Wash. The defending GNAC champion Vikings are also undefeated and 4-0 in league play.
"Obviously they are the best team in the Northwest. They've been picked to win our conference and they're the No. 2 ranked team in the nation," Sekyra said.
"We're just going to go up and give them the best game that we can. We are the underdogs and we just hope to have a good game against a great team."
