SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Already adept at assisting on goals,
Alexa Diaz made good on a chance to score one herself on Saturday.
For the second straight game to start the season, Diaz set up
Laura Moore for an early strike, then added a late goal of her own – the first of her career – as the No. 21-ranked Seattle Pacific women got into the 2013 win column with a 3-0 non-conference decision at Point Loma Nazarene.
The Falcons (1-1) recovered from Thursday's 2-1 setback at No. 3 UC San Diego, a game in which they scored first and lost despite a commanding shot advantage.
"I could not be prouder of my team. We bounced back incredibly well today, showing a lot of character and fortitude," SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra exclaimed. "We were coming off a game where we deserved better, outshooting San Diego 20-7.
"This could have been a day where our kids were still stuck in that because they were so disappointed. But they came out and played very well today."
Sophomore forward Moore (Kent, Wash. / Kentwood HS), connected at the 9:53 mark. That was her second goal of the season and fourth of her career. Junior midfielder Diaz (Burien, Wash. / Kennedy HS) now has six career assists after logging her second of the season.
On Thursday, Diaz found Moore late in the ninth minute for an early lead against UC San Diego.
Kelly Gould (Everett, Wash. / Archbishop Murphy HS), a sophomore midfielder, gave Seattle Pacific a two-goal margin at 69:22, her first tally in Falcon colors. She is a transfer from Nevada.
Junior midfielder
Demi Waitley, a native of nearby Coronado, Calif., set up Gould's goal with the first assist of her career.
Then, just as the clock ticked into the 86th minute, Diaz scored off an pass from freshman forward
Maddie Krauss (Lake Oswego, Ore.).
Senior goalkeeper
Natalie Harold (Vancouver, Wash. / Heritage HS) earned her first shutout of the season and her eighth as a Falcon. She stopped three shots.
The Falcons had 13-5 advantage in shots, forcing Lupe Herrera to make six saves for Point Loma (0-2).
Saturday's game returned the Falcons to where it all began on the women's soccer field. The inaugural game for the program was on Aug. 25, 2001, at Point Loma, and ended in a 1-1 tie.
Seattle Pacific now will head back for its home opener, set for Thursday against Dixie State at Interbay Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
"We're excited to come home to Interbay," Sekyra said. "I think you're going to see continued momentum from here on out from this team."
