Hannah Huesers netted two second-half goals Thursday for the Seattle Pacific women, who rallied for a 3-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory over Saint Martin's at SMU Soccer Field.
A sophomore forward from Lake Stevens (Wash.) High School, Huesers increased her league-leading total to 10 goals. She has back-to-back two-goal games, including a pair of scores in a 6-1 home win over Northwest Nazarene on Oct 11.
"She's starting to really take over in terms of assertiveness. She's willing to put some things on her shoulders and take over at times," said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra.
"It's incredibly impressive because she has that kind of skill set and talent. I couldn't be happier with Hannah, she's fun to watch."
Huesers tied the game 1-1 in the 58th minute and, following a 78th-minute scoring strike by teammate
Heather Young, tallied the Falcons' third goal with 6:01 left to play.
"We kind of gave up a soft goal early, but we were resilient today," Sekyra said. "We didn't just get the tying goal, didn't just get the go-ahead goal, but we put them away.
"That's the sign of a really good team, when you don't just fight back to tie or take the lead, you fight back to put a team away with three goals. I was really proud of that."
SPU (7-3-2) improved to 5-2-2 in conference play while the Saints (1-10-2) dropped to 1-7-1.
The Saints got on the board first with a goal 7:54 into the contest. Sasha Dini served a corner kick into the center of the box that Abby McFaul finished for her third goal of the season.
SPU trailed 1-0 at halftime despite a 6-2 shot advantage. The visitors were held without a shot over the final 26 minutes of the half.
Demi Waitley's attempt at 18:44 that went wide left was their last try of the period.
That shot drought stretched to 32 minutes as the Falcons went without an attempt for more than 12 minutes after intermission.
Their initial second-half shot didn't come until 57:27, but it was a good one. Huesers reached a bouncy diagonal pass from left side defender
Ashley Shaw (Seattle Lutheran HS) and hit a hard, first-time shot past the onrushing goalkeeper to level the score.
Heather YoungYoung (Lacombe, Alberta) quickly re-directed a lofted free kick from
Isabel Farrell (Redmond, Wash./Interlake HS) for the go-ahead goal at 77:30. The senior forward has a knack for netting decisive scores as eight of her 15 career goals were game-winners.
"The ball was really whipped in hard and Heather helped it on to change it by about a foot," Sekyra described. "I liked Heather's attitude about coming across and being the first to that ball."
The Falcons got an insurance goal at 83:39 when Huesers dribbled 20 yards past three SMU defenders before firing a six-yard shot into the left side-netting.
Senior goalkeeper
Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS) stopped two shots for SPU.
Sunny De Boer made three saves for the Saints, who were outshot by an 11-6 margin.
The SPU women remain on the road for their next three games. They visit Monmouth, Ore. on Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference game against Western Oregon.
Sekyra has a simple recipe for continued success on the road.
"Play 90 minutes of SPU women's soccer. Just stay the course. Nothing changes. Just stay consistent in being who we are and things will always work out."
The Falcons next home game is Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., also against Western Oregon.
