SEATTLE – Viktoriya Vasina scored in the 69th minute Thursday and goalkeeper Kayla Lipston amassed 11 saves to preserve Central Washington's 1-0 women's soccer win over Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest at Interbay Stadium.

SPU (4-3-1) suffered its second straight setback and saw its league record leveled at 2-2-1.

The Wildcats (4-5-0) improved to 3-2-0 in GNAC games.

Despite the loss, Coach Chuck Sekyra appreciated the fortitude of his Falcons.

"They stayed after it, showed the hunger and desire to get back into the game. I certainly like that attitude, there was a fight and determination."

The Falcons registered a commanding 24-8 shot advantage, but the Central goal was impenetrable. When four shots got past Lipston, Wildcat defenders cleared two of them off the goal line and the other two attempts hit the post.

Freshman defender Brooke Pingrey (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) was the primary recipient of the unlucky breaks while unleashing four shots. Her attempt in the 51st minute was cleared off the line near the right post by CWU defender Aubrey Rodgers. Pingrey had a 79th-minute shot carom off the left post.

Junior forward Laura Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) had six cracks at the Wildcats goal, four of them directly on target. Her 12-yard attempt from the left side across the goal was cleared off the goal line by a sliding Megan Ward just before it could slip inside the right post.

Neither team had any dangerous opportunities during the initial 45-minute half.

SPU applied constant pressure after halftime, compiling a 9-2 shot advantage during the opening 23 minutes of the second half.

Two of those attempts came in quick succession as Falcons senior Alexa Diaz knocked a hard shot off the left post in the 56th minute and Hannah Huesers' put-back try off the rebound was denied by Lipston.

"We created enough chances to score four or five goals," Sekyra said. "We hit the post twice, had the ball cleared off the line and missed a couple open nets. I certainly like how we attacked in the second half and we played well enough to win."

The Wildcats broke the deadlock with their third shot of the half, a 16-yard strike by Vasina. She collected the loose ball during a scramble in the SPU box and delivered a shot from the right side into the upper left corner at 68:46.

Seattle Pacific had seven tries at the equalizer, but none of them found the back of the net.

Senior goalkeeper Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS) was credited with three saves for the Falcons.

The SPU women play at home again on Saturday in the second of four consecutive home games. They entertain Saint Martin's for a 4:30 p.m. game at Interbay Stadium.

"We need to come back and play attacking soccer," said Sekyra of his plans for Saturday. "We want to kind of push our players up the field a little bit higher and get more numbers in the attack, which we did in the second half. We need to try to get on people early."
