VIDEO: Julian WhiteSEATTLE – The Falcons tapped the Arizona pipeline for some remarkable recent recruits. Thursday's performance by two of those players had Coach
Mark Collings gushing.
Stephen MacDonald scored two of his three goals during the opening 2:39 Thursday, starting third-ranked Seattle Pacific on its way to a 6-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer triumph over South Dakota School of Mines at Interbay Stadium.
"To start with two quick goals really helped and took some of their momentum away. They had three really competitive games in a row against three of the better teams in our league," Collings said.
"More importantly it showed the maturity of our team. We were able to come out and jump on them right away. After the tough stretch of games that we've had there may have been a letdown in years past, but the maturity of this team showed tonight with how we came out."
The Falcons (13-0-1) extended the longest winning streak in school history to 12 games. They improved to 10-0-0 in league play for 30 points and an eight-point cushion over second-place Northwest Nazarene.
SPU is one of only six NCAA Division II men's soccer teams without a loss.
MacDonald pushed his team-leading total to eight goals, beginning with a low 30-yard blast inside the right post 1:53 into the game.
Just 46 seconds later MacDonald struck again, this time a 12-yard shot that carried across the box and into the right side-netting at 2:39.
The sophomore forward completed his first career hat trick early in the second half on a putback in the goalmouth after a shot by
Jess Cayetano (Portland, Ore.) caromed off the left post. The goal, at 48:38, was MacDonald's fifth in the last three games.
Stephen MacDonald"We keep talking about Stephen after every game. He's getting better and better and hitting his stride," said Collings. "I certainly don't think a hat trick a game will be the norm, but he is definitely capable of being a big goal scorer for us. We'll try to keep him in form for Saturday and see if we can ride this streak that he's on a little bit."
MacDonald hails from Phoenix, Ariz. He had the first three-goal performance by a Falcon since Tyler Schulz achieved a hat trick on Sept. 21, 2011.
A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Schultz completed his career in 2011 with 38 goals, the ninth-highest figure in SPU history. Sixteen of those goals came during the 2011 campaign after which he was honored as a first-team All-American. Joining Schultz on that All-America squad was Falcons' teammate Jon Pearman, a defender from Glendale, Ariz.
"We've been really fortunate to get some great players out of Arizona," Collings exclaimed.
Junior midfielder
Danny Olivas assisted on MacDonald's second score and the next two goals as well that gave SPU a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Olivas is another monumental player from the Grand Canyon State. He was a prep teammate of MacDonald's at Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Phoenix.
Thursday's three assists give Olivas five for the season to go along with two goals.
"Danny has been so good for us these last nine to 10 games," said Collings. "Tonight he was able to get some stats to show for his work. He has been one of the main keys to our midfield play this year. He does a lot of little things that don't show up on the stat sheet, but that help us a lot."
At 29:45, Olivas fed a perfect pass to
Matt Merchant (Portland, Ore.), who slipped an 18-yard shot off the goalkeeper's hands and inside the right post.
Freshman
Julian White (Redmond, Wash./Redmond HS) notched the first of his two goals at 44:12. He had an easy eight-yard finish in front of the goal following quick passes from
Keenan dePinna and Olivas.
White's second goal, at 57:31, capped the scoring and was assisted by dePinna. On a dribbling run into the box, White maneuvered around the goalkeeper before depositing a nine-yard shot into the open goal.
"One of the thing's I'm most excited tonight is Julian's goals. Julian has been so good for us all year," Collings said. "Multiple coaches have said things to me about him after we've played and they just talk about how dynamic he can be. For him to put a couple balls in the back of the net, we're hoping that this is just the beginning. He certainly has the ability to score a lot of goals.
"Hopefully this is just that start for him. Boy, if we can get Julian and Stephen and the rest of our front line really going here this could be a fun last couple months."
Keenan dePinnaThursday marked the SPU debut for dePinna, who delivered two assists in his inaugural outing after being sidelined the first 13 games due to an injury. The sophomore from Portland, Ore. is a transfer from Oregon State University.
SPU sophomore goalkeeper
Cody Lang (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark HS) stopped two shots en route to his seventh shutout.
Hardrockers' starting goalkeeper Braeden Federle had one save before being replaced at halftime by Eric Milbrandt, who compiled four saves.
The Falcons outshot the visitors by a commanding 23-6 margin.
The SPU men remain at home to host the University of Mary on Saturday. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.
