Falcons secure GNAC Tournament berth with 2-1 victory at Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. – Hannah Huesers tallied a goal early in each half Saturday for the Seattle Pacific women, who held on for a 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer win over Simon Fraser at Terry Fox Field.
 
The Falcons (9-4-2) improved to 7-3-2 in league play and clinched a berth in the four-team GNAC Tournament. They are tied for second place with Montana State Billings and trail only 20th-ranked Western Washington, which beat SPU 1-0 on Thursday.
 
SPU won the 2013 GNAC Tournament championship. The semifinal games for this year's conference playoff are set for Nov. 6 at 4 and 7 p.m. at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash. The winner of the championship game, set for Nov. 8 at 1 p.m., receives the GNAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament.
 
Simon Fraser (2-14-0) fell to 2-10-0 in conference games.
 
Huesers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) found the back of the net in the seventh and 47th minutes to increase her league-leading total to 12 goals. The sophomore forward has registered four multi-goal games this season.
 
The Clan trimmed the deficit to one at 50:19 on a successful shot from the top of the box by Elishah Jilling off a pass from Olivia Aguiar.
 
The Falcons limited SFU to only two shots the rest of the way, including a 60th-minute try by Sierra Leung that carried wide right.

Mikaeka Guerreiro's attempt with 3:59 left to play was snared by goalkeeper Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS). That was the lone save for SPU's senior shot-stopper.
 
Priya Sandhu collected six saves for the Clan, who were outshot by a 13-4 margin.
 
SPU limited the hosts to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes while compiling five attempts of its own en route to a 1-0 halftime lead.
 
Huesers put the visitors on the board 6:48 into the contest. She gathered the rebound of a shot by Isabel Farrell that caromed off the post and scored on the put back.
 
Her second goal came less than two minutes into the second half. Huesers capitalized on a mis-handle by Sandhu for an easy score at 46:45.
 
The Falcons return to Seattle for their final home game on Thursday, against Western Oregon. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium. They will wear pink jerseys in recognition of the annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.
 
Thursday's contest also marks the final home playing appearance for seven SPU seniors, who will be honored in a brief pre-game ceremony.
