Shayla Page scored on a header from a 66th-minute corner kick Saturday, lifting the Seattle Pacific women to a 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer victory over Saint Martin's at Interbay Stadium.
"Our kids made sure they got the job done. Their effort in the second half reflected that, the final result reflected that," said SPU coach
Chuck Sekyra. "And we scored on a set piece. It was just a fun night as far as how we played."
The Falcons (5-3-1) improved to 3-2-1 in league play, halting a two-game losing skid.
Page (Redmond, Wash./Eastlake HS) got the game winner on her second goal of the season, both of them from corner kicks served by
Isabel Farrell (Redmond, Wash./Interlake HS). The kick was sent from the right corner to the far post where Page snuck a five-yard header between goalkeeper Sunny De Boer and the left post at 65:27.
Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy) did not make a save for the Falcons, who outshot the visitors by a lopsided 20-4 margin.
"We played a great game from beginning to end," Sekyra said. "When you walk in the locker room at halftime outshooting a team 12-1 and you finished at 20-4, your team is just doing a lot of things right."
De Boer stopped eight shots for the Saints (0-8-2), who remained winless in GNAC games with an 0-5-1 record.
A put-back shot gave SPU a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Hannah HuesersJunior
Laura Moore (Kent, Wash./Kentwood HS) hit a 12-yard blast from the left that was blocked by De Boer. The ball rebounded to the right side of the goal where sophomore
Hannah Huesers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) tapped it in from point-blank range for her team-leading sixth score of the season.
"Hannah is always dangerous," exclaimed Sekyra. "She's somebody that we have so much confidence in and at any time she can take over a game and make a difference. I love that about her."
Huesers' goal stopped SPU's 191-minute scoring drought and provided a lead that lasted just over 10 minutes.
Kelli Bannerman scored the equalizer in the 28th minute with the Saints only shot of the first half.
Taylor Gersch delivered a long, looping through ball from midfield that Bannerman reached just inside the box before booting a 15-yard shot into the left side of the goal.
The teams were deadlocked 1-1 at halftime despite a 12-1 SPU shot advantage.
Six minutes into the second half, Bannerman had a great opportunity to put the Saints ahead. A through pass put her one-on-one with the SPU goalkeeper, but Bannerman's 16-yard shot went just wide of the right post.
The Falcons women remain at home for a pair of games next week. They host Montana State Billings on Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday matchup with Western Oregon at 1 p.m.
