BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Jordan Moineau recorded a golden goal 1:45 into the second overtime Thursday, helping Cal State Stanislaus end Seattle Pacific's season with a 2-1 double-overtime win in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament at Harrington Field.
Fourth-seeded Stanislaus (14-4-1) moves into a second-round matchup with No. 1 seed and West Regional host Western Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The No. 5 seed Falcons, who made their 12th consecutive postseason appearance, completed the 2014 campaign with a 12-5-3 record. They lost for first time in their last 11 playoff openers.
SPU earned the NCAA berth by virtue of winning the GNAC Tournament championship for the second straight season.
"We had a very good team this year and we all wanted to go further," said
Chuck Sekyra, who completed his 12th season as head coach. He directed the Falcons into the postseason every year.
"Once we tied the game up, the way we continued to play, I just thought we were winning that game tonight."
Moineau assisted on teammate Jade Poon's 52nd-minute goal that put the Warriors ahead 1-0. SPU drew level with 6:36 remaining in regulation on Hannah Hueser's team-leading 15th goal.
The first 10-minute extra session was scoreless with the Falcons posting a 2-1 edge in the shot count.
The initial attempt of the last overtime proved decisive. Moineau netted her first goal of the season at 101:45 to end the contest. She won a battle to control a pass from Katelyn Nebesnick and, after taking a touch to get behind the defense, slipped a 14-yard shot from the right side into the left inside netting.
Freshman goalkeeper
Molly Stinson (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville HS) registered her collegiate-high total of seven saves to help offset the Warriors slim 18-17 shot lead. She suffered her first loss in seven games between the posts for SPU.
Chelsea Lewandowski was credited with five saves for Stanislaus.
Laura MooreNeither team seriously threatened the goal during the first half despite a 9-5 Warriors shot advantage. The only near misses were a pair of short shots in traffic by SPU's
Kelly Gould (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS) in the opening 15 minutes. Her first attempt went wide right while her second clipped the right post.
Things opened up offensively in the second half and resulted in one goal for each team.
Poon put Stanislaus ahead at 51:36 on a shot with her back to the goal. Sabrina Williamson served a right side corner kick to the top of the box where Moineau headed it toward the goalmouth. Poon turned her body halfway before flipping a volley over her left shoulder and into the right side of the Falcons goal. That was her team-high 14th score of the season.
SPU applied steady pressure in search of an equalizer and nearly got it when freshman
Simone Herzberg (Portland, Ore.) had a loose ball fall at her feet in the right side of the 6-yard box. Her close-range shot caromed off the right post in the 80th minute.
Less than one minute later,
Isabel Farrell (Redmond, Wash./Interlake HS) unleashed a 22-yard Falcons free kick that carried just wide of the right post.
SPU's persistence paid off when Huesers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) found the back of the net at 83:24.
Shayla Page served a long free kick from near the left sideline over a line of defenders on the edge of the 18-yard box. Huesers was closely marked when she collected the bouncing ball with her back to the goal before spinning and sending a 16-yard strike under the crossbar.
"This team has shown great character all year and believed they could win," Sekyra said. "Such a great example of who they are was that they came back and tied that game and then continued to go on.
"We played like that wasn't enough and we were going to win this game. We played great in the overtime, but gave up an unfortunate goal."
This year's 15-goal figure put the Huesers in a fourth-place tie with Jocelyn Charette (2009) on SPU's single-season scoring list. The sophomore forward fell just two tallies shy of the school-record of 17 goals established in 2003 by Shannon Lovejoy and matched in 2007 by Sarah Martinez.
"Hannah had a phenomenal season," Sekyra exclaimed about the first-team All-GNAC selection. "She is somebody who became one of the better players in our region this year.
"That sure is exciting that she's only a sophomore. She's got a lot more goals in her. She's going to keep working hard and her future is going to be fun."
Stanislaus nearly got the game-winner with 1:35 showing on the second-half clock, but a low shot by Maryssa McDuffy was cleared off the line near the left post by Herzberg.
