Suzanna Ohlsen pumped in 20 points, including a clutch 3-pointer early in OT, and Maddey Pflaumer went for a career-high 18 points as SPU women won the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic by beating Humboldt State on Saturday, 83-74.

"Humboldt is a very good team, and we knew that going in," SPU coach Julie Heisey said. "We knew it would be a tough game. I told our kids that one of the keys to the game was how we handled runs, and we had to maintain some poise.

"I'm really proud of our team .We beat a really good team."

Senior point guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. In addition to her 20 points, she dished five assists.

All five starters scored in double figures for Seattle Pacific (2-0). Senior guard Aubree Callen added 17, senior guard Betsy Kingma had 15, and sophomore guard Hannah Rodrigues chipped in 10. Pflaumer collected a team-leading seven rebounds.

Callen (Jerome, Idaho) joined Ohlsen on the All-Tournament team.

The lead changed hands 15 times, with two of those occurring during the extra five minutes.

Down by six at 63-57 with 3:14 to go, the Falcons climbed back into a 65-65 tie on a 3-pointer by Ohlsen with 44 seconds left.

Kersey Wilcox put Humboldt back on top at 67-65 by draining a pair of free throws at the 25.4-second mark. Senior forward Pflaumer (Issaquah, Wash. / Issaquah HS) then drove to the hoop, was fouled, and hit both free throws with 9.5 seconds left. The Lumberjacks never got off a final shot, as they lost the ball, and Ohlsen got a chance to launch a long one from just over midcourt with the clock running down. It bounced off the board, setting up overtime.

Two free throws by Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.) put the Falcons on top in OT, 69-67. A'Jaee Foster answered with a traditional three-point play for a 70-69 Humboldt lead.

Pflaumer put SPU ahead for good, 71-70, with two free throws at the 3:35 mark. Ohlsen drained a 3-point dagger from 23 feet away on the right side at 2:53, extending it to 74-70. The Jacks hit a free throw, then Seattle Pacific got the next six points, effectively putting it away at 80-71 with 30.3 seconds to go.

"With 2:51 left, we were down by six, and I called time out and really challenged our kids," Heisey said. "I said, 'You know what? We are in this game. We need to get three stops, and we need to get three scores.' We got four stops in a row, and on one possession on offense, we had two or three offensive rebounds.

"It just changed the momentum of the game."

Neither team ever forged a double-digit lead. SPU had an early nine-point advantage at 15-6. The largest lead for Humboldt State (1-1) was 63-57 with three minutes left in regulation.

Foster finished with 18 points for Humboldt. Wilcox had 11, as did Jae Shin.

The Falcons came up big at the line, hitting 29 of 36. That included 9 of 10 in overtime, and 11 of their last 12 overall.

SPU plays in the West Region Crossover Classic next weekend at Western Washington University in Bellingham. The Falcons have the 5 p.m. game both nights, playing UC San Diego on Friday and Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
