BELLINGHAM, Wash. – On a night when not all aspects of the game went their way, the final result did.

And for the second game in a row, that result came against one of the leading women's basketball programs in the West.

Aubree Callen scored 22 points, and Seattle Pacific got its last seven points at the free throw line to secure a 71-66 victory against UC San Diego in the West Region Crossover Classic tournament.

Friday's victory in Western Washington University's Carver Gymnasium came on the heels of SPU's 83-74 overtime decision against Humboldt State last weekend in Seattle, and boosted the Falcons to a 3-0 start for the second year in a row.

"It wasn't the prettiest game, but we gutted it out," head coach Julie Heisey said. "That's the mark of a good team, when you can find ways to win when things aren't going well."

SPU is back in Carver Gym on Saturday at 5 p.m. to take on Azusa Pacific. The Falcons have beaten the Cougars all five times they've played, including 83-74 last season on Azusa's home court.

The point total was a season high for senior guard Callen (Jerome, Idaho). She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Senior point guard Suzanna Ohlsen and senior forward Maddey Pflaumer added 15 points apiece for Seattle Pacific. Sophomore forward / guard Hannah Rodrigues chipped in 11, six rebounds, and went 3 for 4 at the line in the final 18 seconds.

The score was tied 13 times and the lead changed hands eight times between the West Region rivals.

"It's just being gritty," Callen said. "When it comes down to it, we make big plays, which has been really nice. People are in the right spot."

Added Rodrigues, "It was a battle. What we talked about at the end was we did really well when we stuck to our fundamentals and the things we worked on in practice."

Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) snapped the night's final tie on a 10-footer from the right corner with 2:28 to go, giving Seattle Pacific a 62-60 lead. A driving lay-in by Pflaumer (Issaquah, Wash. / Issaquah HS) with 2:19 left pushed it to 64-60.

UC San Diego (1-1) got as close as three at 64-61 on a free throw at 1:28 to go. But Callen, who hustled for an offensive rebound and was bumped hard to the floor, drained both subsequent free throws at the 1:02 mark, and SPU kept it at a two-possession margin the rest of the way.

Ohlsen had five of Seattle Pacific's 12 steals, and also handed out a season-high six assists. The Falcons have gone for double-digit steals in all three games this season.

Miranda Seto led the Tritons with 17 points. Farrah Shokoor had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.

SPU used a 12-0 run during a span of 4 minutes, 20 seconds late in the first half to turn a 28-23 deficit into a 35-28 lead. The Falcons had a 37-32 advantage at the break, with Callen accounting for 13 of her 22 points through the opening 20 minutes.

The Tritons capped an 11-2 run bridging the two halves to go on top 41-39 with 16:19 to play. The lead went back and forth three more times during the next four minutes. But after the Falcons went up 44-43 on a pair of Pflaumer free throws at the 12:40 mark, they never trailed again, although UC San Diego did forge four more ties after that.

"The bottom line is we had to fight, and we did," Heisey said. "I'm proud of the kids for coming through and showing pose. To be fair, it's just Game 3 (of the season), and we were playing a hard team.

"Thankfully, we had a great opportunity to learn from a tough situation," she added, "and came out ahead."
