BELLINGHAM, Wash. – They stayed with what worked – and stayed ahead.

Neither one of those things is easy against Azusa Pacific.

Suzanna Ohlsen scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds on Saturday, and Maddey Pflaumer posted her first career double-double as Seattle Pacific beat APU in a battle of unbeaten teams at the West Region Crossover Classic women's basketball tournament, 77-65.

The Falcons are now 4-0 for the second straight season. The Cougars, whose fast start included two games in which they overcame double-digit deficits to win, slipped to 4-1.

"At halftime, the biggest things we talked about was just make every possession count, and rebounding," head coach Julie Heisey said. "We told them, 'We've got a lead, and we have to stay with what got us the lead.' That was good defense, rebounding, pushing the ball at them, and getting some good points in transition."

In the first two weekends of the season, SPU has knocked off Humboldt State (83-74 in overtime last Saturday),UC San Diego (71-66 on Friday), and now Azusa Pacific.

"That's a big deal," Heisey said. "We have to keep on getting better. But we can take a lot of things from these weekends against conference championship-type teams."

SPU returns home to Brougham Pavilion to meet San Francisco State on Wednesday. The Thanksgiving Eve game has a special 5:00 p.m. tip-off time.

The 23 points for senior point guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) was a season high. The nine boards tied her previous career best set on Feb. 2, 2013, against Western Oregon. She also handed out two assists, and matched another career high by blocking two shots in the game at Western Washington University's Carver Gymnasium.

Ohlsen was named the tournament MVP, as the Falcons were the only team to win both games. It was her second straight such honor. She won it last week at home in the Sodexo Tip-Off Classic, which ended with the victory against Humboldt.

"We definitely have a very difficult preseason," Ohlsen said. "We have seven games in row that are all pretty tough opponents. We were very well prepared with the scouting report and practicing pretty intensely all week long. We came into this game with a lot of confidence and came away with the 'W.'"

Senior center Pflaumer (Issaquah, Wash. / Issaquah HS) had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The latter tied her career best, set twice previously.

The Falcons had five players in double figures for the second time this season. Besides Ohlsen and Pflaumer, senior guard Betsy Kingma (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport HS) tallied 14, senior guard Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) had 10, and freshman guard Courtney Hollander chipped in10, her first double-digit game as a collegian.

Callen joined Ohlsen on the All-Tournament squad, adding a team-high seven assists to go along with her 10 points on Saturday.

Seattle Pacific trailed just once all night, at 4-2 in the opening moments. The Falcons ran off 13 straight points in the middle of the first half to take a 24-10 lead with 7:39 left before the break.

But Azusa Pacific, which wiped out a 14-point second-half deficit to win its opener against Cal State Dominguez Hills, then climbed out of a 17-point first-half hole four nights later to beat Cal State Los Angeles, stormed back. The Cougars put together a 12-2 run, cutting the Falcons' lead to 26-22.

APU got as close as two at 31-29 before Seattle Pacific pushed it back to 33-29 by the intermission.

The Cougars scored the first basket after halftime to get within 33-31.SPU responded with 10 straight points, restoring a double-digit lead at 41-31. Azusa never got closer than six after that.

Kelly Hardeman led APU with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds.
