Cory Hutsen's 20 points powered 22nd-ranked Seattle Pacific to the most lopsided men's basketball win in school history with a 119-53 rout of Northwest Indian College on Monday in the first night of the Vulcans Thanksgiving Classic at the Civic Auditorium.
The Falcons (4-2) eclipsed by one point the program's largest previous margin of victory, a mark of 65 points set in a 118-53 home win over Northwest College on Feb. 14, 1989.
Monday's 119 points provided the seventh-highest scoring output in school history and the highest total since a 124-point effort against Northwest Nazarene on Dec. 31, 2005.
SPU's single-game school scoring record of 128 points was established against Colorado Christian on Nov. 27, 1998.
The Falcons will get an unplanned day off on Tuesday. They were scheduled to play Washburn, but the Topeka, Kansas-based team had flight trouble and is stuck on the mainland. The Ichabods' uniforms, however, made it to Hawaii, but arrived in Honolulu instead of Hilo.
The SPU men didn't encounter travel troubles, arriving in Oahu on Wednesday for a two-day tournament last weekend. They made their presence felt Monday in Hilo.
Cory HutsenHutsen hit 9 of 15 shots from the field en route to his third 20-point outing of the season, and his second in consecutive games. The 6-foot-8 senior center amassed 23 points in Saturday's 87-74 loss at BYU-Hawaii. He netted 21 points in a 90-38 home win over Minnesota Crookston on Nov. 15.
Junior forward
Mitch Penner pitched in a season-high 19 points for the Falcons, who also got 12 from
Will Parker, 11 from
Riley Stockton and 10 from
Shawn Reid.
Stockton was perfect on the night in four shots, including two 3-pointers. He led a 67-percent shooting performance (46 of 69) that featured 9-for-16 accuracy on treys.
Treat Hollis led three NWIC double-figure scorers with 13 points. Austin Miller chipped in 12 and Lawrence Kaleak 11.
The Eagles (0-9) are from an independent school in Bellingham, Wash. that annually plays a variety of NCAA and NAIA opponents. They were held to 35-percent shooting from the field (18 of 52) and made just 4 of 12 shots from 3-point range.
SPU led the entire way after
Garrett Swanson nailed a jumper 10 seconds into the game. He assisted on the next basket 21 seconds later, setting up a jump shot for Hutsen.
Hollis made a layup with 18:13 left in the first half to draw the Eagles within 8-4. They made just one field goal during the next 3:14.
That drought enabled the Falcons to forge a 17-2 run that
Matt Borton started with a layup at 18:00 and finished with a jumper at 15:58 to put them ahead 25-6.
The margin grew to a first-half high of 30 points, at 58-28, when Reid hit a layup 45 seconds before halftime. Northwest's Hollis made the first of two free throws at 0:17 to set the halftime score at 58-29 in favor of SPU.
The Falcons displayed 60 percent accuracy (22 of 37) from the field during the opening period while holding NWI at 39 percent (9 of 23).
SPU opened the game even further with a streak of 16 unanswered points in a four-minute stretch midway through the second half. Five different Falcons contributed to the surge that Stockton capped with a 3-pointer for a 93-40 lead with 7:55 remaining.
A later run of nine points, fueled by four points apiece by Reid and
EJ Poulsen, stretched the score to 114-49.
Swanson hauled in eight rebounds to spark the Falcons 47-20 advantage on the boards.
The SPU men wrap up their visit to Hawaii on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. PST with a clash against tournament host Hawaii Hilo.
After returning from Hawaii, SPU gets a week-long break from competition before Great Northwest Athletic Conference play begins on Dec. 4 at Northwest Nazarene.
The Falcons next home game is Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. against George Fox. That is their only December home game at Brougham Pavilion.
