Box Score Box score, play-by-playSEATTLE – The Seattle Pacific Falcons did not take an early start on their Thanksgiving holiday.
Much to the delight of coach
Julie Heisey.
Suzanna Ohlsen scored 16 points and had five steals while playing just 19 minutes, and the Falcons shot better than 50 percent for the first time this season to roll pas San Francisco State in a non-conference women's basketball game, 84-54.
The Thanksgiving Eve victory in Brougham Pavilion kept the SPU undefeated, now at 5-0. It is the second straight year of winning the first five games.
But even in stepping onto the court against the Gators (now 0-4) after logging impressive earlier victories against top-caliber West Region teams Humboldt State, UC San Diego, and Azusa Pacific, the Falcons didn't downshift at any point on Wednesday.
"What I was most pleased about was how we played hard for every possession for 40 minutes, and played defense all 96 feet of the floor – that was exciting," said Heisey, who logged her 200th SPU coaching victory. "For us to be able to play hard and to be able to defend – our defense was fantastic, even at the end of the game."
Senior guard
Betsy Kingma (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport HS) added 14 points, and senior guard
Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) chipped in 10.
Sophomore guard
Rachel Shim (Sammamish, Wash. / Skyline HS) set two career highs, going for nine points (previous best was eight) and five rebounds (previous was two). She also tied her career high with two assists.
Freshman guard
Courtney Hollander (Lynden, Wash. / Lynden Christian HS) grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds, doubling her previous career high.
Heisey, now in her 10th year here, has a 200-64 record with the Falcons. She is 362-183 overall in 18-plus seasons of coaching.
Suzanna Ohlsen The 16 points for senior point guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) brings her within 13 of 1,000 for her career. She'll come into next Thursday's ROOT Sports-televised Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener against Alaska Fairbanks in Brougham Pavilion with 987 points.
Seattle Pacific hit 51.7 percent from the field (31 of 60) on Wednesday, including 7 of 10 by Ohlsen. The previous best for the Falcons was 43.9 percent (25 of 57) in last Saturday's 77-65 victory against Azusa Pacific in Bellingham.
Except for an early 4-2 deficit, SPU led all the way. San Francisco State was still within striking distance at halftime, down just 40-30. But the margin remained in double digits throughout the second half and grew to as many as 33 points with 2:29 left.
"The competition is within yourself," Heisey said. "For us to be a champion, we have to be able to play the same way with the same intensity every night. I think we did that tonight. That's one reason we shot 52 percent from the field."
Led by Ohlsen's five steals, Seattle Pacific had 12 for the night. That's the fourth double-digit steals total in five games this season.
The Falcons are now undefeated in 10 all-time games against the Gators.
Leti Galarza led San Francisco State with 14 points.
