Box Score Box score, play-by-play LAS VEGAS – It was seven years ago when the Seattle Pacific Falcons last swept their non-conference women's basketball schedule.
Thanks to some stiff defense on Wednesday night, they're on the verge of doing it again.
Aubree Callen scored 18 points, and
Suzanna Ohlsen added 17 as 19
th-ranked SPU rolled past Dixie State in the Las Vegas Challenge, 91-63.
The Falcons (8-1) return to the Orleans Arena court on Thursday at 12 noon to face Holy Names. That will be their final game of the calendar year and their final non-conference game. SPU is 7-0 in those games so far. The last perfecto outside of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play was 9-0 in 2007-08.
Senior guard Callen (Jerome, Idaho) also logged three rebounds and three assists. Fellow senior guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) also had three rebounds and three assists, along with three steals.
Sophomore guard / forward
Hannah Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.) chipped in 12 points for SPU, pushing past 200 for her career. She now has 202.
Julie HeiseyHead coach
Julie Heisey, who was in her third year at the helm during that last non-conference sweep and now is in her 10
th, said Wednesday's defensive effort was instrumental in putting the game out of reach.
"I was really happy. They're very capable of scoring and they're very good at rebounding and getting a lot of points on the offensive boards," Heisey said. "We only gave up two offensive boards in the first half, and we were able to mix up defenses and control the tempo of the game. It was a close game, then all of a sudden, it was 33-18."
Callen and Ohlsen each contributed four points during a decisive 12-2 first-half scoring run as the Falcons (8-1) extended a 13-12 edge to 25-14.
Dixie State (3-5) get four straight points from Haileigh Emerine to cut the margin back to seven at 25-18. But Seattle Pacific ran off the next 10 in a row on a traditional three-point play by sophomore guard
Stacey Lukasiewicz, a 3-pointer from the top of the key by senior guard
Betsy Kingma, two free throws by senior forward / center
Maddey Pflaumer, and a scoop shot by Ohlsen to make it 35-18.
It never dropped below double digits the rest of the day. The Falcons had a 54-32 lead at the half. It was their first 50-point half since scoring 52 in the second half of a 97-79 victory against Central Washington on Jan. 12, 2012 in Brougham Pavilion.
"Any time, you want to take away what people do best," Heisey said. "We knew we didn't want to let them drive the middle, and we knew their No. 3 (Kaylah Miller, who finished with a game-high 20 points) was a good shooter. She still got her shots. But I think we were able to take away a lot of their points on transition. We didn't allow them to get points in the paint and not get second shots."
SPU's final score was its highest since a 97-59 victory at Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 18, 2012. This season's previous high mark was 84 against San Francisco State on Nov. 26.
The Falcons were almost perfect from the free throw line on Wednesday. They hit their first 15 on the way to a 26-of-28 mark (92.9 percent)
Freshman guard
Jordan McPhee grabbed a career-high eight of Seattle Pacific's 43 rebounds. That beat her previous best of six, set just last Saturday in a 79-58 victory against Northwest University.
