Suzanna Ohlsen will readily tell anyone that she had plenty of help in reaching 1,000 career points.
On Thursday night, Seattle Pacific's senior point guard gave her team plenty of help in opening the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball schedule with a decisive victory.
Ohlsen poured in 22 points – including her 1,000
th – and
Molly Grager set one career high and tied another in her first start of the season as No. 23-ranked SPU routed Alaska Fairbanks in Brougham Pavilion, 75-47.

Senior point guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) came into the game needing 13 points to become the 21
st player in the 40-year history of the Falcons program to hit the millennium mark.
With a ROOT Sports regional television audience watching, she got there on a driving lay-up with 10:35 left in the first half, giving the undefeated Falcons (6-0) a 20-7 lead.
Ohlsen hit a phenomenal 10 of 12 from the field, including both of her 3-pointers. In fact it was a string of seven points in a row – a lay-in off a feed from
Hannah Rodrigues, a 3-pointer from the left corner with
Jordan McPhee assisting, and then the lay-in, all in a span of 55 seconds – which put her at an even 1,000.
"It's a testament to my teammates. I had so many screens set for me today, and I had so many fantastic passes made to me," Ohlsen said. "It was just a really great team effort that was able to get me past that milestone, so props to them."
Ohlsen is the second Seattle Pacific player in two years to top the 1,000 mark. Now-graduated
Katie Benson got there on Feb. 14, 2012. Ohlsen also is the 60
th player in the 14-year history of the GNAC to reach it – and is already the third this season, following Erin Chambers of Simon Fraser and Kayleen Goggins of Montana State Billings.
"Sue is a very hard worker, and is always in the gym trying to make herself better," head coach
Julie Heisey said. "To hit 1,000 points means you have to be playing a lot of basketball for four years – you're not just doing it in two years. I'm excited she has been able to accomplish that milestone."
Sophomore forward / guard Rodrigues (Eugene, Ore.) added 12 points and eight rebounds, and senior guard
Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) chipped in 11. Junior center Grager (Kirkland, Wash. / Juanita HS) tied her career high with nine rebounds, and also contributed a career-high eight points.
The Falcons were highly effective at both ends of the court. They shot a season-best 56.4 percent from the field (31 of 55), the second game in a row of being above 50 percent.
At the other end, they kept Fairbanks a whopping 34 points before their season scoring average of 81.4, and limited the Nanooks to just 29.1 percent shooting (16 of 55).
"I said to my assistants, 'If we can keep them under 60, I would be very pleased,'" Heisey said. "To hold them to 47 points was huge. They get into the paint, they score quickly, and their post players are good. We did a good job defending. The last (10) minutes, they scored only seven points, so that was a big deal."
Seattle Pacific trailed just once all night, at 6-4, then ran off nine straight to start a 20-1 run. The lead stayed in double digits the rest of the night, with the UAF never getting closer than 12 at 35-23 just before halftime.
The Falcons, who now have 26 straight victories against Alaska Fairbanks, had assists on 20 of their 31 baskets, with all five starters earning at least two. Ohlsen's four led the way.
On Saturday, it'll be two nationally ranked teams in Brougham when No. 18 Alaska Anchorage visits for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
"I'm so antsy to play that game – I'd be ready to play right now if I could," Ohlsen said. "It's a great rivalry between the two teams, and both of us have pretty good records so far. It's definitely going to be a game to see."
