VIDEO: Coach Chuck SekyraSEATTLE – Thursday's milestone victory snuck up on Coach
Chuck Sekyra.
He collected his 200th career women's soccer win as Seattle Pacific defeated Simon Fraser 4-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Interbay Stadium.
"I love to be where I'm at and I've just kind of lived in the moment here. I never have thought further ahead at all, so it kind of crept up on me on this one," Sekyra admitted.
The Falcons (4-1) have compiled a 200-30-17 record during Sekyra's 12 seasons, earning NCAA Division II Tournament berths every year. He directed them to the 2008 national championship.
With time to collect his thoughts after the game, Sekyra was able to put the landmark victory in perspective.
"It just means I've had amazing players. I've just had some amazing women in our program. I'm very blessed to coach some great players and great people. I've also had some tremendous assistant coaches.
"I couldn't ask for a better group out her tonight to share this 200th win. It's a real blessing."
Sophomore
Hannah Huesers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) was feeling sick before the game. She didn't show any ill effects early on, scoring the opening goal just 3:24 into Thursday's contest.
Brooke Pingrey (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS) served a long through ball to the left that Huesers touched once before delivering a 10-yard shot into the lower left corner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Junior
Isabel Farrell (Redmond, Wash./Interlake HS) scored her third goal as a Falcon in the 27th minute, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead they would carry into halftime. The University of Washington transfer dribbled down the left flank and, before reaching the box, unleashed a low drive that carried 22 yards into the right side of the goal.
SPU outshot the Clan 9-1 during the first half, but four saves from goalkeeper Priya Sandhu kept the visitors close.
Senior
Alexa Diaz (Burien, Wash./Kennedy HS) notched the Falcons third goal six minutes after halftime on a 17-yard blast into the upper right corner that was assisted by
Laura Moore.
The Clan (0-5) spoiled the shutout in the 75th minute when Olivia Aguiar's attempt from 18-yards out trickled inside the left post.
Heather Young (Lacombe, Alberta) capped the scoring with a seven-yard blast from the center of the box off a pass from
Maddy Booster at 79:57. The senior forward was the fourth different Falcon to net a goal.
"We're explosive right now. We're scoring a lot of different ways," Sekyra exclaimed. "We're pretty nasty on set pieces, we're good getting behind people, we're good combining, we're good from distance and we're finding the ball in the box.
"This is one of the more explosive team's I have ever had and it's fun. I told the team after the 5-0 win against Notre Dame, 'there's going to be a lot four and five goal games coming' and they responded really well tonight."
Senior goalkeeper
Alexa Hughes (Everett, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS) stopped five shots for the Falcons.
Sandhu made six saves for Simon Fraser, which was outshot by a 17-7 margin.
The SPU women remain at home to host sixth-ranked Western Washington on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Interbay Stadium clash is a rematch of last season's GNAC Tournament championship game that the Falcons won on a penalty kick tiebreaker.
A national semifinalist in 2013, Sekyra says the Vikings are good again this year.
"They're a quality team, ranked high in the nation, a super confident team and a tough team to beat. That's a great program, so we're going to have our hands full."
