MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Seattle Pacific Falcons made their share of comebacks through the first 15 games of the women's basketball season.

In their 16th game, they ran out of time to make another one.

Suzanna Ohlsen scored 21 points on Thursday night, but SPU went cold from the field during the second half and saw its eight-game winning streak end as Western Oregon rallied for a 67-62 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory.

The loss by the No. 8-ranked Falcons (14-2, 6-2 GNAC, combined with Alaska Anchorage's 71-58 victory against Western Washington on Thursday, snapped a first-place tie in the standings. UAA – the only other team to beat Seattle Pacific this season (85-58 on Dec. 6) – is now one game ahead at 7-1.

"We have an opportunity to learn from our mistakes and take responsibility to find out what we can do to get better," head coach Julie Heisey said. "We have a lot of time left and it's not the last game of the season. When we lost to Anchorage, we went along many weeks without a bad practice, and that's what I'm expecting after tonight."

SPU was up 33-25 at halftime, but hit just 32 percent for the field (10 of 31) through the final 20 minutes. Western Oregon, after a cold shooting first half of just 37.5 percent (9 of 24), drained 15 of 24 after the break (62.5 percent), finishing at 50 percent for the game (24 of 48). The Falcons hit just 4 of 21 from 3-point range; the Wolves were 6 of 10, half of those makes coming in the last 6:41.

"We made mistakes, and we didn't play as aggressive as I would have liked," said Heisey, whose normally sharp-shooting team (No. 3 in NCAA Division II for 3-point accuracy and No. 16 in field goal shooting) absorbed its first road loss of the season. "We had kids who had shots, but they were hesitant to shoot, trying to make the extra pass, and it wasn't always there."

Seattle Pacific will try to get on track at Saint Martin's on Saturday night at 7:00. The Saints knocked off defending conference champion Montana State Billings on Thursday, 63-54.

On the way to their best start since 2008-09, the Falcons came from six points down late in regulation to force overtime and eventually beat Humboldt State in November. Then, they started January by rallying from double-digit deficits in three consecutive road games to win at Western Washington, Simon Fraser and Montana State Billings.

On Thursday, SPU had a 50-42 lead with 8:06 to play before Western Oregon went on a 16-3 run to take a 58-53 advantage at the 2:23 mark.

Ohlsen drove for a lay-in and hit the ensuing free throw, cutting it back to two at 58-56 with 1:58 still remaining. But the Wolves (5-11, 2-6 GNAC) scored on their final five possessions – three field goals, and three free throws – to halt a five-game losing streak that had them in the conference cellar.

"You have to keep momentum," Heisey said. "When you miss a lay-up or drop passes or give up an offensive rebound, then they have momentum and we lose momentum."

Redshirt senior guard Aubree Callen (Jerome, Idaho) added 14 points for the Falcons.

The Wolves were led by the 16 points of Sami Osborne, with nine during the last 7½ minutes. Senior forward Dana Goularte, averaging a double-double of 16.2 points and 10.7 rebounds before missing the last four games with an injury, came off the bench for 10 points and five boards in 20 minutes.
