LACEY, Wash. – This time, the comeback ran out of time.

Aubree Callen scored 22 points, and Suzanna Ohlsen had 21 on Saturday night, but the Seattle Pacific Falcons couldn't wipe out the last part of a 15-point second-half deficit and dropped a 68-66 decision to Saint Martin's in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game.

The No. 8-ranked Falcons (14-3, 6-3 GNAC) fell short for the second time this week, having lost on Thursday night at Western Oregon, 67-62.

Down 58-43 to Saint Martin's with 7:39 to play and 63-50 at the 4:42 mark in Marcus Pavilion, SPU closed it all the way to 67-66 on a 3-pointer from the right corner by redshirt senior guard Callen with 21.9 seconds to go.

Finally forced to foul with 9.9 seconds left, Seattle Pacific caught a break when normally-deadly Angela Gelhar hit just one of the two free throws.

The Falcons got the ball downcourt, and even in heavy traffic underneath the hoop were able to get off a decent shot. But the lay-in attempt by senior Betsy Kingma rolled agonizingly over and off the rim. The ball wound up loose on the floor with players from both teams scrambling for it when the buzzer sounded.

SPU was attempting to come back from a double-digit deficit for the fourth time this month. Earlier, the Falcons successfully rallied to win at Western Washington, Simon Fraser, and Montana State Billings.

"We were a little too passive at times when we should have been attacking the basket," Callen said. "The second half, we played a little more free than before – we weren't hesitating. When it got down to the wire, it was now or never – that's when you get confidence. Sue started being more aggressive, we all followed her lead and just hit some shots. But we weren't able to finish it out."

Seattle Pacific starts the second half of the GNAC schedule with a three-game homestand, beginning Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Simon Fraser.

Callen (Jerome, Idaho) also grabbed five rebounds for the Falcons. Her 22 points pushed her up to 959 for her career.

Krista Stabler led Saint Martin's (6-11, 3-6 GNAC) with 21 points, and was one of four players in double figures for the Saints.

Except for a 5-5 tie, Saint Martin's led the entire game, including that 15-point second half bulge before the Falcons shot their way back into it.

"I'm disappointed for the girls, but we had an amazing second half," Falcons head coach Julie Heisey said. "I'm really proud of the way we finished. I thought we did a lot of things well in the second half, and I liked the way our bench helped us out, which we needed."

After a cold-shooting first half of just 37 percent (10 of 27) that left them in a 40-28 hole at halftime, the Falcons finally started finding their mark, and hit 14 of 27 after the break to finish at 44.4 percent (24 of 54) for the game.  The Saints finished at .442 (23 of 52).

"We can't give up 40 points in the first half," Heisey said. "We've got to work toward putting 40 minutes together, top to bottom."

Callen believes Seattle Pacific will get to that point.

"It's pretty frustrating losing these last two games," she said. "(But) it's a long season. … We have four seniors, and we've been through a lot in the last three or four years. We're going to stay consistent. I have confidence in the whole team and in the coaching staff that we're going to do that."
