SEATTLE – Whether watching from the sidelines or playing on the court, it had the feel of a must-win game.

And the Seattle Pacific Falcons won it.

Aubree Callen poured in a season-high 23 points and hauled down nine rebounds on Thursday night as No. 22-ranked SPU snapped a two-game women's basketball losing streak by beating Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest, 89-76.

The outcome reduced what had been a three-way tie for second place down to just two teams: Seattle Pacific (15-3, 7-3 GNAC) and Western Washington (13-6, 7-3). They square off Saturday night in Brougham Pavilion at 7:00. Simon Fraser, the other part of that tie, fell to 10-8, 6-4 GNAC.

"We don't want to lose two games in a row, let alone three," Falcons coach Julie Heisey said after her team put last week's setbacks at Western Oregon and Saint Martin's behind them to complete a season sweep of Simon Fraser for the first time since 2010-11. "There was a lot at stake. We just talked about keeping our goals in mind. I'm really proud of our kids, and our seniors were amazing from top to bottom."

Senior point guard Suzanna Ohlsen added 21 points and six assists for the Falcons, who led for all but the opening moments in Brougham Pavilion. Senior center Maddey Pflaumer chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.

Betsy Kingma
Senior forward / guard Betsy Kingma contributed eight points, but came up even bigger defensively. She was instrumental in keeping Simon Fraser senior Erin Chambers in check. Chambers, the leading scorer in NCAA Division II at 23.1 points per game, was limited to just 16 on 6-of-15 shooting. With the game still up for grabs inside the four-minute mark, Kingma blocked two Chambers shots in a span of 70 seconds.

"She locked her down tonight," Pflaumer said of Kingma's effort. "Her timing, that block – she was honestly phenomenal tonight. It was a team effort, but a lot of the props go to her."

It was just the fifth time in 18 games that Chambers didn't tally at least 20 points.

Redshirt senior guard Callen (Jerome, Idaho) drained 10 of 16 from the floor. The 23 points leaves her just 18 away from 1,000. The nine boards tied her season high.

Senior point guard Ohlsen (Monroe, Wash. / Monroe HS) is now 19 points shy of joining SPU's all-time top-10 scoring list. Ohlsen has 1,196. She's currently at No. 12. The No. 10 spot belongs to Valerie Gustafson, who had 1,215 from 2001-04.

Up 48-36 at halftime, Seattle Pacific stretched the lead to as many as 21 points during the second half, the last time at 67-46 with 12:41 to play.

But Simon Fraser, thanks in large part to some deadly 3-point shooting (8 of 15 in the second half, with four of those from reserve guard Alisha Roberts), cut it all the way down to seven. The last of Roberts' four treys made it 83-76 with 2:12 to go.

"You hit one, then you hit two – it's contagious," Heisey said. "And they're a good-shooting team."

Seattle Pacific kept the Clan scoreless the rest of the way. Ohlsen found junior center Molly Grager for a turnaround lay-in and an 85-76 lead at the 1:19 mark. Ohlsen drained two free throws at 59.5 seconds, then Callen added two more after rebounding a missed 3-point try by Roberts.

Katie Lowen led Simon Fraser with 19 points.

Down 7-5 early, the Falcons went on an 8-2 run to take a 13-9 lead and stayed in front the rest of the night.

After some shooting struggles last week at Western Oregon and Saint Martin's, SPU hit a season-high 57.8 percent on Thursday (37 of 64). Besides Callen's 10-of-16, Ohlsen was 7 of 10, and Pflaumer 6 of 11. Of the 11 players who saw action, 10 scored and 10 grabbed at least one rebound. Seattle Pacific had a season-low nine turnovers.
