SEATTLE – Replication, not revenge, was the Falcons' goal.

Danny Olivas assisted on the second goal and scored the game-winner on a penalty kick Thursday, helping the 12th-ranked Seattle Pacific men retaliate for their only loss with a 3-2 victory over Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer contest at Interbay Stadium.

The defending GNAC champion Falcons (9-1-2) increased their league lead to three points, improving to 5-1-2 with their third straight win. They sit atop the standings with 17 points followed by Montana State Billings (14). Northwest Nazarene and Concordia are tied for third with 13.

SPU started the season unbeaten in eight games, with six wins and two draws, before losing 1-0 at Simon Fraser on Oct. 3. That is still the team's only defeat.

You might think that revenge was the driving force for the Falcons. Not according to Coach Mark Collings.

"Revenge is definitely not something we talked about. Simon Fraser ruled this conference for a long time, so our guys are going to get up for that game because we want to be where they are and where they've been. They've worked hard and earned it and so we're trying to keep up with them."

The Clan won four consecutive conference crowns from 2010-13 before being dethroned last season by SPU. They advanced to the national semifinals in 2012 and 2013.

Thursday's loss dropped Simon Fraser (4-3-4) to 3-2-3 in GNAC games after losing for the first time in its last six outings.

"What a good soccer game. All the credit to Simon Fraser, they are a fantastic soccer team," Collings said. "We were good enough and I think it was a fair result. The game could have gone either way, but we maybe had a little better quality to win."

The Falcons started off fast, getting a pair of goals inside the opening 10 minutes.

Jordan Kollars (Central Kitsap HS) served a swerving corner kick from the left side that caromed off goalkeeper Brandon Watson's fingertips and into goal at 5:40. Defender Kyle Jones was in the center of the goal, but his clearance occurred after the entire ball had crossed the line.

SPU made it 2-0 just over four minutes later on a play initiated by Olivas (Phoenix, Ariz.), who delivered a long through ball from midfield. Gabe Kellum (Rennes, France) received the pass and dribbled 20 yards into the left side of the box before firing a shot past Watson at 9:45.

Even with two early goals, Collings was wary because of the potent Clan attack.

"It felt great, but at the same time you know how much firepower they have. There was a long way to go and obviously they showed that. To get two early goals, I would have hoped that would settle us down a little bit more than it did."

The Clan cut the deficit in half when James Fraser slipped a 12-yard shot into the right side of the SPU goal at 17:51. Michael North assisted on the goal with a pass from the left flank into the center of the box.

SPU got an early second-half score to go up 3-1. Mori Tsuchiya (Chief Sealth HS) was fouled in the box on a breakaway by Anthony Van De Vendel and Olivas converted the subsequent penalty kick at 50:32. That was the fourth goal for Olivas, tying him for the team lead.

The Clan again answered, this time with a first-time volley from Adam Jones off a pass from the left side from Kyle Jones. The 10-yard shot went high into the SPU goal at 54:50.

The Falcons gave up multiple goals for the first time since Nov. 6, 2013, a streak of 33 games where they held opponents to one goal or less. Junior goalkeeper Cody Lang (Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark HS) limited the damage by stopping five shots.

Two of Lang's saves were of the spectacular variety. On the first shot of the game, Simon Fraser's Michael North drilled a high, 20-yard blast that Lang tipped off the crossbar just 2:46 into the contest.

In the 73rd minute Mamadi Camara, who netted the winning goal in the first meeting, broke free in the box. Lang came racing off his line and made a sprawling slide to deflect the point-blank shot away from the goalmouth.

"They tactically did some things today that were very good for them," Collings said. "We had a hard time sorting it out and a couple of our guys looked a little off, but that has a lot to do with them.

"Simon Fraser has some special individual talents that put a lot of pressure on us defensively. Their good players made some good soccer plays, and that's going to happen. Ultimately we had just enough to keep them out."

The Falcons offense bailed out the defense with its third straight game with three or more goals. Their 10-goal output during that span equals the scoring total from the first nine games combined.

Watson made two saves for the Clan, who were on the short end of an 11-8 shot count.

The SPU men remain at home to entertain Northwest rival Western Washington on Saturday. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Interbay Stadium.

The Vikings owned an early 1-0 lead in this year's first encounter, on Oct. 1 in Bellingham. But Ian Adams scored the equalizer in the 65th minute and Tsuchiya got the game-winner in the 81st for a 2-1 SPU win.

"Western is very good. We had a tough game with them up there where we had to come back," said Collings. "They are always ready to play Seattle Pacific and we have to find a way to enjoy this one tonight and make sure we're ready Saturday night to put on an even better performance."
