VIDEO: Senior Day CeremonySEATTLE – On a day when Seattle Pacific honored its six seniors, it was a junior that quickly launched the festivities.
Hannah Huesers scored twice in the opening 12 minutes Saturday, starting Seattle Pacific on its way to a 4-0 non-conference women's soccer victory over Carroll College on Senior Day at Interbay Stadium.
The Falcons completed their regular-season schedule with a 12-3-2 record, including a 7-1-1 home mark.
An NAIA competitor from Helena, Mont., the Saints dropped to 12-5-1. They are the champions of the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Huesers (Lake Stevens HS) increased her scoring lead in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with her 13th and 14th goals of the season. She led the league last year with 15 goals.
The junior forward opened Saturday's scoring just 2:21 into the game. She received a long through pass from senior
Ashley Shaw (Seattle Lutheran HS), spun and flipped a six-yard shot over the goalkeeper and inside the left post.
Huesers found the back of the net again at 12:01, scoring from 12 yards on a low shot from the left side. A pass from senior
Laura Moore (Kentwood HS) set up the score. Huesers came out soon after that goal and did not return, playing just 13 minutes.
"She bagged herself two today that were well deserved. She got a lot done in a little bit of time today," said SPU interim coach
Arby Busey.
"Hannah put her skills on display again today. She's a difficult matchup regardless of how you try to play her because she's got a little bit of everything. She got the size, she got the speed, she's got the power and she's got the technical ability to be clever around goal."
Senior
Shayla Page (Eastlake HS) then scored on a 10-yard header off a free kick from
Emma Holm (Lake Washington HS) at 25:07. That provided a 3-0 lead that SPU took into halftime.
It was the sixth goal during Page's four-year career as a central defender, but her first this season.
"She has been a focal point for us on set pieces and for her to get one today was justice," Busey explained. "Shayla has put herself in the right spot and just hasn't connected as often as we'd like to see or she would like to see. It was great to for her to get one today and hopefully that gets her going a little bit on those and is something that we can count on in the future."
The lone second-half tally came at 82:45 on a short header by
Mickayla Mury (Kelso HS) after
Kasey Reeve's (Fountain Valley, Calif.) cross from the right flank.
Goalkeepers
Molly Stinson and
Abby Smith combined for SPU's eighth shutout. Stinson (Woodinville HS) started and made two saves before being replaced at halftime by Smith (Sumner HS), who stopped four shots.
A trio of goalkeepers collected four saves for the Saints, who were outshot by a 20-11 margin.
The six seniors recognized during a pre-game ceremony were Page, Moore, Shaw,
Isabel Farrell,
Monica Gomez and
Taylor Hauck. They all were in the starting lineup Saturday.
"It was fun today," Busey said. "We wanted to go out and celebrate some players who have given a lot to the program. That's what it was today, a celebration and a good, fun game for everyone involved."
The Falcons completed their conference slate on Thursday with a 2-0 home win over Western Oregon. The have a 7-3-2 league ledger and will be the No. 3 seed for next week's four-team GNAC Tournament that will be played in Burnaby, B.C.
The SPU women meet No. 2 seed Concordia in a semifinal matchup on Thursday at 4 p.m. They were 3-1 victors in this season's only meeting, on Oct. 8 in Seattle, dealing the Cavaliers one of their two league losses.
"Concordia was definitely one of the better games that we've played this season and so that needs to be taken into account that we were at our near our best in that game," said Busey. "We caught them on a good day, playing their fourth game in eight days on a road trip. But we were very, very good on that night and we hope to recreate that on Thursday."
SPU captured the last two GNAC Tournament championships, both of them with penalty-kick shootout decisions over Western Washington. The Vikings are undefeated in league play and have secured the top seed with their opponent still to be determined.
