SPU Puts 25 on GNAC Soccer Scholars List

12 Falcons student-athletes are repeat selections, six of them three-time honorees

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Thirteen student-athletes from the Seattle Pacific women's soccer squad along with 12 Falcons men were honored as members of the 2015 Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Academic All-Star team.
 
SPU's 25-person contingent was the largest in the league, nine more than any other school. The Falcons also flourished on the field this fall as the men won their second straight conference championship and the women were GNAC Tournament runners-up.
 
Both teams participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament and advanced to the West Regional semifinals.

Seattle Pacific led in GNAC men's selections with 12 players on the list. Four of the 43 student-athletes of the men's squad compiled perfect 4.00 grade point averages, including SPU sophomores Jess Cayetano (Portland, Ore.) and Ryan Higgins (Issaquah HS).
 
Of the 14 repeat recipients on the men's team, six were from SPU, including a trio of seniors who were three-time honorees. Ian Adams (Shorecrest HS), Garrett Jones (Boise, Idaho) and Matt Merchant (Portland, Ore.) were also named to the academic team the in 2013 and 2014.
 
Central Washington led the women's team with a total of 16 selections and SPU was second with 13.
 
Five of the 24 repeat selections on the women's squad were from Seattle Pacific. Three of those were seniors named to the academic team for the third time: Laura Moore (Kentwood HS), Shayla Page (Eastlake HS) and Ashley Shaw (Seattle Lutheran HS).

Boasting the best grade point average among the Falcons women was sophomore Simone Herzberg, a physiology major from Portland, Ore. with a 3.96 GPA.
 
A total of 121 student-athletes – 76 women and 45 men - were named to the GNAC Soccer Academic teams.
 
To be eligible for the GNAC academic squad, student-athletes were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at the university.
